I just picked an ar50, it is different from my friends in that it dosnt have any inlay on the headstock other than IBANEZ, would this be an earlier model ar50? serial is f804xxx i plan to make a project out of this one. jazzz

Is it a castle shape headstock?
Is there a truss rod cover with "Artist" on it?

Anyway, there is a black one in the 1980 pricelist:

Why would you make a project out of it? Is it missing many original parts?

AR50's came with and without the headstock inlay. They also came with and without binding. It's probably early vs late production but I am unaware of any definitive research on this.

yes there is binding, turned creme yellow now, and yes to castle headstock, the truss cover dosnt say anything, so i dont know if thats been changed, its missing pick ups and tuners and bridge, and id like to turn this into a good player, im not that concerned about stock originality on this one, i think light is better, ta ta , jazz, ps, any hot infor on pick ups for this one, later, j

That's a chrome Gibraltar I bridge, probably the Quik Change II tailpiece too, two non-covered Super 70 pickups and the machineheads, probably Velve Tune. There is very little information in the catalogue:

Could cost you about 200 dollars to restore. Luckily the original parts are chrome.
If you (temporarily) use other parts, make sure that you don't need to drill any extra holes (especially tuners and bridge).

The original AR50 hardware is Nickel, not Chrome.

Grover makes a tuner that's a direct replacement.

Huh, ah yes, the 1981 catalogue says "NiChrome", while the 1980 catalogue says about the parts of the ST1300 and ST1400: "Die Metallteile sind verchromt".
http://www.t3-kundenserver.de/htmlpages/redasys/_c ore/databases/t_meinl-uploads/1980_stepahead_meinl .pdf

That's probably the same as what I have on my ST50 (1980), and probably the same as the parts of the AR50.
Anyway it is not Gold and are less corrosion sensitive as the gold ones + the eBay prices are lower.

What do you think "direct replacement" means?
