Jchester...Look close it has the eq like a 2622 AND it has a Varitone like 'Lucille"........very interesting guitar, wonder what it sounds like ?

Yeah... I saw those too.

I'd guess it sounds like a 2622 with only its bridge pup on. I can't imagine the 'Varitone' doing any more than splitting the coils & throwing them in & out of phase. But then one mini-switch turns the eq on & off... what's the other one for?

Odd duck... pretty though... & in beautiful shape!

Boy, 3 band active EQ, a 5(?) position Varitone, trisound switch...that's quite a few tonal possibilities.

It sure does look like a nice specimen though, albeit somewhat 'naked' looking (IMHO) with no neck pickup or toggle switch...

Would love to hear what it sounds like.

What a strange bird. It has a stunning finish and the Super 80 looks in great shape. Too bad they don't show the dings on the back or the serial number.

I don't understand the electronics. Regarding the pickup, the tri-sound is all that's needed. It's almost as if they replaced the master EQ level pot with the Varitone switch??? btw...the EQ switch doesn't look original.

There's no reserve, so this guitar will sell. I hope it ends up with a collector.

Guys,

Take a look at the 21st fret. There appears to be an engraved inlay similar to the "Custom Made" inlay used on the AR150x. My 10th anniversary AR10BL has a similar engraved inlay.

I've posted a question to the seller about it. The auction states they answer emails within 48 hours, so we'll have to wait and see.

I'm not sure that absent biding tabs tells you much. Not absolutely sure, but I think the entire AR transitionals from ~'79 did not have them...this thing looks like it was played 11 times...at home!

Unless it was rebuilt...which I doubt.

I don't think that "limited edition" inlay is there, in the neck. It looks like a straight piece of inlay. Good chance this is a one-of-a-kind, IMHO. How does one obtain a one-of-a-kind old Ibanez in the first place (if this is one, or any other one for that matter?) You would think an employee made it up for himself... or as an excample to show what he was suggesting as far as design. The fact that there are obviously not too many exactly like this around would make me think there was something not "up-to-snuff" about it or else they would have went ahead and produced it. They probably figured "OK but... what's the sense of the one pup? May as well put 2 pups in there. Interesting guitar, no matter what it is. I think Dave winds up with this one.

No engraving on the 21st fret, although if you look closely, the inlay is not a 3 piece block, and is a bit larger than it "should be". It sure looks to me like it was an engraving inlay that was simply left blank.

I agree with Dave, there's going to be a lot of action on this. May he who has the deepest pockets (or the smallest brain) win :-)

I wouldn't be so quick to judge the seller so harshly.

The "shill" bids were by a someone that has bid on a ton of other stuff. It appears to me to be simple probing for the high bid. I doubt they're in cahoots with the seller.

Some people see a line drawn in the sand as an invitation to step over it.

OK, Bob. It's time for you to inject your rhetoric on the ill-effects of bidding too early in an auction.

As a player, I think that with one pickup, this guitar is severely limited, and thus, I have no plans for bidding. For $900, I'd rather have a 2619 or 2622.

For a collector, the appeal is obvious, however, I still would think twice. The issue is that it's an odd-ball guitar which will make it harder to sell down the road for a price that's worthwhile, especially if you pay a premium to purchase it initially.

Chaz... I don't suggest starting a thread about bidding early on ebay.
There is already such a thread on here and it gets people bent out of shape.
I think we were warned about continuing with it.

I thought I had presented some inarguable points of view there on bidding early but... I was sadly mistaken about that.

Basically, only bid early when it's MY auctions!!!

(That's a joke gentlemen, put your pitchforks and torches back down.)

Michael,

While I agree with your point, it is valid only under the assumption that a potential buyer actually cares about future resale value. I'll wager most of the members that consider themselves "collectors" don't put a priority on resale value when bidding on something they really want.

And Bob, don't confuse fatigue over the bidding early/late point with disagreement. I happen to agree with your point of view (which has been VERY WELL documented :-)).

With one pup you actually have less magnetic pull on the strings themselves. IMO they sound better than two pup guitars. I've got an Gibson SG Jr that absolutely smokes with just a P90. I don't miss the neck pup one bit.

Strings... "green Grass and High Tides" brings back many good memories. One of the first songs I ever noodled around with. Great tune and it still holds up to this day. The first song I ever completely figured out (chords) to was "American Pie" by Don McLean. I don't know why I mention that but when you mentioned Green Grass, it just made me think of some of the first songs I noodled with. I don't think your photo completely downloaded above. Did it?

Ok, I'm thinking Jim Donahue, Jeff Hasselberger, or our own fearless leader John Shanley.....

I'd put my money on Jim Donahue..

I think our mystery man lives in the US, drives a Honda S2000, has a taste for cold Irish beer straight from the keg, and tinkers with airconditioners.

ok - that went right over my head...

I send JD a picture of the guitar and he asked me for the serial number. I then sent him a link to the auction and I never heard back. If JD bought the guitar, then the silence makes sense.

Irish beer in the US .

Guinness doesn't travel very well. They make it here is Sydney and it tastes like dish water for $6 a pint! Disgusting.

"Irish beer in the US" - may refer to Killian's Irish Red. (my personal fave - yum)

Beyond that... I have no clue.

Why all the cloak & dagger?
