Did the '77 2619 have Super 70's or Super 80's? When the 2619 had Super 70's (with a flying finger logo?), did it also have a trisound switch? Assuming it did, can anyone compare the Super 70's with trisounds vs. the Super 80's with trisounds? For example, how does a bridge Super 70 in phase reversal compare vs. the Super 80 in the same configuration? tnx, mk |

Not sure on the first two queries MK Completely different p-ups tho...I believe the 70s are Alnico-based (more PAF-type) magnets and the 80s are ceramic...way different tone characteristics on which I'm sure others would care to elaborate/compare. Somewhat close to comparing the 58 to the 80 - way different output peaks. So, I doubt the trisound configs would bring them any closer together for a common similarities list. |

Mike A 77' 2619 would 'almost' certainly be fitted with Super 80 Flying Finger/butterfly pickups(FF/B)and probably one trisound swicth on the rear pup. Saying that, there is documented evidence here of FF/B Super 70's so your guess is as good as mine on when the change over form FF/B Super 70's to Super FF/B 80's occured or, whether they went from Script logo Super 70's to FF/B Super 80's without using the FF/B Super 70's Slightly later this changed to the more commonly seen FF/B Super 80 tri-sound switches for each pickup. I think the smooth heel came in about the same time. Check out the 78' catalogue. PHEW! Post butterfly's would be Super 70's with the script logo's and the single tri-sound switch. For me (IMHO) the Super 70's alnico type pickups (look like a regular Gibson PAF) are a nicer/warmer sounding pickup. When I got my first 2619 in 1978, I swapped the pickups out after a while and fitted Dimarzio PAF's. Sounded nicer straight away. Yeah yeah I know.... Sacrilidge! six |

Check out this auction: Ebay Item #190140843839 I was intrigued by the so-called 'Super 70' pickups, which I thought, due to the flying fingers, might actually be Super 80's. I have extra trisound versions of both Super 70's (with no flying fingers) and Super 80's (with flying fingers). Each of these pickups only has 3 colored wires, just as described in the auction. Everything I read says that you really need 4 wires to be able to properly split humbuckers for single coil or phase reversal use. For the later 2619's and the 1st generation AR500, Ibanez was able to wire the trisound switch for series HB, single coil & phase reversal options even though the Super 80's only had 3 wires. I was wondering if: - could the pickups in the auction be Super 80's? - would the addition of a 4th wire make the trisound settings less noisy? - can anyone shed some light as to 3-wire vs. 4-wire pickups? 4-wire pickups should have (+) and (-) wires for both coils, thus 4 wires. What are the three trisound Super 80's wires? mk |

mk, You've mentioned the noise factor before. Are you meaning that the acutual "sound" is noisy, or are you taking about noise when changing settings? Honestly on my 2619 the phase reversal setting could be called a noisy tone as it is quite thin and no matter how the tone knob is adjusted or what combination of pickup, there is just no bottom end to be found (possibly something that the eq on a 2622 could overcome?). |

R2112 Nope...supposed to be that way. That mode is out-of-phase and is intended for use with another p-up set to series (standard ) mode. Do a search on this site for "O-O-P" and you will find enough to chew on. I say never run o-o-p as a solo p-up...they are noisy, you hear all the string buzz and etc, but that moax, MK, above will probably try to tell you otherwise ; Mike, aren't you supposed to be playin'? |

MK...I hope you knew I was only needling you about your (well warranted) hyper-fascination with o-o-p ; |

Strings: just got back from vacation and catching up... Hyper-fascination is an understatement. I'm hopelessly addicted! My new (old) AR500 is the real deal. The EQ/pre-amp raises it to a completely new level beyond the 2619. Now, I can actually get some serious volume when running o-o-p. In addition, this guitar is the most versatile I've ever played. Serious tone in HB & single coil, plus all the combinations. Add the EQ/pre-amp on top and you've got a monster! However....it's not perfect. I would love to be able to adjust each pickup volume separately so I can, for example, vary the bridge o-o-p to neck HB volume ratio, a la the 2619. Hey - what's a few more knobs??? Also, a middle single coil pickup (with a separate volume control, of course), would perfect this sucker. IMHO, it wouldn't take much to make this guitar a better Cowboy than the Cowboy itself. mk |

But it would look a bit more like Lesh's Guild "Godfather"... many many knobs...I'd be lost. |
