Just wondered if the lotus headstock inlay changed much (size, materials, design) over the 70-80's transition. I think I read somewhere here that it was in Abalone on the early top end models....thoughts on this?

Chips -

Everybody seems to poo-poo the book "Ibanez: The Untold Story" so take this with a grain of salt.

I found a reference on page 78 to the *neck* (not headstock) of the 75 Artist solidbody debuted at the 76 NAMM, "Fancier models now had pearl block inlays with a diagonal abalone inset."

The only headstock reference I found was on the same page stating, "...an elaborate fleur-de-lis headstock design..." but it doesn't expand on that.

- Pete

Chips:

Yes the "lotus" inlay did change in shape from the 70s to the 80s. I think the later shape is more elegant.

As far as the materials used, it does depend on the specific model. Most all were "overlays", not inlays. I can't think of one off hand, but I would not doubt that some top/custom built models did have real headstock "inlays".

BTW, the 2007 AR305s have the headstock ornamentation silkscreened on in white paint. No thanks.

Hmm...

John, Chips...I just did a quick review of three:

78 2622

79 AR500 (debut run - this surprises me cuz of the 2622 body...the neck IS sightly slimmer on that 500 too!)

82 AR300

ALL different shaped "fleurs".....all elegant ;

Can you tell the difference between an overlay and an inlay with the naked eye?
I've got a few old script logo ibanez guitars (including a Hummingbird copy and a "Bunny ears" PF200)..none of this reflects a greenish tinge..Wondering if my overlay/inlay was abalone...The lotus also seems slightly squatter (no less elegant) than other models i've seen. Strings, Any chance of putting three pics side by side of your three for comparison purposes?

Chips:

Here's 3 headstocks. The first and second show the dramatic difference between the "first lotus" (mid to late 70s) and the second, which is still used today. The third shows how the lotus has been "squeezed" to fit a narrow headstock.
