So experts, how much is it worth and what will it sell for? I'm tempted.

Curious...

Well, I put in a bid at $506 and I didn't crack the reserve. ;-)

North of $2K if more than one of the current ICW members who lust after these get involved. Too bad it's a 10 day auction. We'll have to wait for it.

Like I said, $506 doesn't crack the reserve. My guess is that the reserve is well above $1K. Good luck Peter. I know you've been wanting one for a while. By the way, how's the Moderne restoration coming?

Chuch -

In all honesty, I may let this one go.

I asked the seller for some close up images of the various dents, chips, and buckle rash.

So, depending on how bad she looks close up depends whether I'll go all out or not.

The Moderne....

*sigh*

Remember, you asked...

I originally bought a 76 Ibanez Model 2351 with all original gold hardware, including the Super 70s and their covers as a donor guitar.

It's in really good shape and once I got it in my hands, I said, "I can't do this. There's got to be another way to get period parts."

I found someone with almost a complete set of gold hardware from an early 70s Ibanez LP clone that I have been talking to since 22 July.

Right, July.

Unfortunately, the guy travels with his band a lot so he's not easy to get in touch with.

Last Monday I got an e-mail saying that 3 other guys are now interested in this hardware and he's not sure what he's going to do. He may put it all up on eBay.

OK, fine. If you do, please let know. Meanwhile, I'll look elsewhere.

On Thursday I got an e-mail saying he's now ready to ship me the hardware. He will pack it up on Tuesday.

I've just about had it with this guy. He doesn't know whether he's coming or going and I'm starting to feel the same way.

I spoke with the luthier that's going to do the restoration and he still has time to do the Futura before the end of his season if I get it to him soon.

He uses outdoor drying sheds so his season is limited by warm weather.

I think I'm going to strip the hardware from the 2351 just so I can get it to him.

If I come across period replacements later down the road, I may restore the 2351.

I don't know. The goal for me is the Futura.

Thanks for asking,

- Pete

Pete, I understand about using an Ibby for parts. I bought a PF200 (pics posted under another thread a few weeks ago) and my plan was to pull out the pickups and put in a couple that I bought to mimick Frank Zappa's 1979 LP Custom. When I got the guitar (and based on great feedback from others on ICW) I realized I was two pickup covers and a pickguard away from a stock PF200, so I went in that direction instead. Now I'm not even going to consider an Ibby LP for my project. I've got my eye on a couple Grecos and Burnys instead.

Good luck with the Futura.

Fox -

You asked the question originally: how much is it worth?

Chipped and rashed? Even minimally? About $1300 going by eBay's over inflated prices.

I'd go $3K for a mint condition one w/a HSC.

I'm not sure I'd go $2K for one that's chipped and rashed.

It would have to be *really* minor defects that could be rubbed out.

Chuck -

I've seen photos of the Greco Destroyers (Explorers?) and they look nice but I've never held one.

I'm not familiar with "Burnys". What are those?

I need a pair of pup covers for my 75 Destroyer.

Will the Greco/Burny versions fit the pole spacing of the Ibanez Super 70s?

Thanks,

Well this one looks fairly mint but I haven't seen any high res pictures. Have you gotten any better photos yet? It is really hard to tell the real condition of this guitar from the ebay photos.

Either way I don't think it will be mine. I really shouldn't spend the money anyway. Would have been a nice impulse buy.. :-)

Burny is a brand used by Fernandes. Their LP replicas are spot on and high quality. You'll see them all the time on eBay for $600+, just like the Greco LP's. A few months ago there was a Burny/Fernandes Explorer for sale on eBay. I think I even posted the link to it in one of the Destroyer threads. It had a BIN of just $800, I believe. I don't know whether Burny hardware would be transferable, but Greco's should be, since they were made in the FujiGen factory alongside Ibanez guitars.

If you are completely jonesing for a Destroyer, here's a Greco, looks to be from the 80's though, judging by the absence of a FujiGen serial on the headstock:

Ebay Item #320156599497

Much cheaper too. (Though I bet it wouldn't be a replacement source for a true 76/77 Destroyer.)

Cleversj -

I was wondering when you'd notice this thread.

I think Fox submmitted a private offer for $2.2K and was turned down flat.

I've asked for some close-up, *in focus* shots of all the defects but I haven't received any response in a day or so.

That makes me a little bit nervous.

I put in a nominal bid of $300+ and I'm not bidding any higher until I see close ups.

He's probably going to want around $3K for this thing.

Having admited dents, chips, and buckle rash he's not going to get that kind of cash out of me unless I see close-ups.

That is just too much cash for a pig in a poke.

Peter, Peter, Peter,
Would I do a thing like that? Doubtful, the Challenger really doesn't fit, although I did bid on it.
The reason it took so long for me to get into the foray is that I was on location and did not have internet access.
I also asked for high res pics and am waiting.
Someone would have to be (in my opinion) crazy to spend 3000 for that guitar. Supply/demand really does not support that kind of price escalation. I think some celebrity is banging up the price on these referencing the last three that have gone on eBay.

I've been known to occasionally do crazy things but spending $3K blindly is not going to be one of them.

There's 8 days left on this auction so I figure I'll give the seller a couple more days and then I'll start nagging him for images.

Heck, I thought $1500 was a little pricey for a good one but that seems to be what everyone is now asking for the mid-70s Destroyers and RRSs.

Pete,
In the thread above you mention that you already have a '75 Destroyer, is that true?

Also, 1500 for a decent conditon Destroyer is well within my budget (this week assuming I don't go buy another MC400 type).

the strat copy just caught my eye as a low price guitar that I thought that I would like to try out. If you are really into it, I'll leave it alone. I didn't really want to spend big money on one anyways. It just looked clean.

Jack -

Yes, I do.

The 75 Destroyer was the one I found on The Gear Page.

That's part of my problem. The 75 I have is pretty clean.

It's missing the pup covers and it has a few minor chips on the back side edges but it's nice.

75 Destroyer

I've got it unstrung right now because I'm trying to make pup covers that fit but I'm not having much luck.

So, for me to shell out $3K for this one that's on eBay right now, it better be at least as clean as the 75 I already have.

Emotionally, though, I want a version that's like the one I used to own and that's either a 76 or a 77.

I don't really know. I wasn't in to collecting back then, it was just a great guitar.

Actually, what I want is my old one back but that will never happen.

*sigh*

I'm telling you guys, if neither of you bids this thing up, it will sit at $1,500 for the rest of the auction. I'd wait for the seller to crack and lower his reserve. Then, flip a coin and one of you pounce. Then, when the next one comes along, there's just one of you left to get it.

If you remember, the last one went to the 1500 range, sat then went through the roof in the final minutes. I happened to be traveling and stopped outside a Holiday Inn in Memphis and was I ever shocked when the final price came through.
Nobody on ICW fessed up to that auction, nor the immediate previous auction which if memory serves me did the same thing.
I really have a tough time stomaching 2200 but I am tired of looking.
I believe that I am the same as the rest of you in the fact that I will not pay much for a beat up guitar. I have had three bad experiences on flebay in the last year and am considering other avenues - like ICW for my new additions.
I tried to get some pics form ozarkmountaindaredevil eBay seller but they were very uncooperative. After the auction ended, I wrote countless emails with increasing offers and never received a reply.
I think that this seller has had other guitar auctions, anybody know who he is?

Like i said previously, this auction won't follow the others as far as I'm concerned unless I see close ups and the defects are negligible.

You must have missed the threads on the other auctions.

I'm assuming you mean the two eBay Destroyers that were in near-mint condition and came one right after the other?

I was the reason the last Destroyer went up to $2800 (I think).

I kept nickel and diming it up a $100 at a time thinking the other guy would eventually quit.

He didn't and I started getting cold feet as I got closer to $3K.

The one before that I pushed it up to about $2200 and I think that's when the second one came onto eBay.

I bailed out of the first one thinking I'd get the second one cheaper.

Boy was I wrong.

Now I'm kicking myself for not going to the mat for one of them.

There was a third Destroyer (it might have been a RRS) on eBay that wasn't in as nice shape that I bid on.

It looked like a mismatch of parts and a non-serial number neck.

It was being advertised as a 75 but it had FF pups.

I asked for close up photos and got them.

I told her she either had something really rare or a cobbled up instrument so I needed more info.

I never heard from her again and it didn't sell.

Peter,
Those are the three auctions that I mentioned and I bid against you in both of them and neither one of us won the auctions. Miss ozarkantiques had the third auction and mysteriously disappeared after the close of auction. She is the one that I sent numerous emails to and she never responded. I had asked to see the guitar in person as I knew that I would be driving within 100 miles of it. NO response.
Even with high res pics, this guitar is really worth less than 2000 (my opinion) and upper thread comment of 1300 seems reasonable. 1500 probably will be my final bid. I really don't like what I am seeing in these guitars anymore.

The Greco Explorer linked above is actually a later 80's model and probably unsuitable if you are looking for an Ibanez "lawsuit" period Destroyer.

You want an earlier Greco like this one

http://tokaiforum.com/viewtopic.php?p=45198&highli ght=&sid=71799822159b559e10930f736459dafa#45198

I've owned both Ibanez & Greco Destroyers and they are identical. You may want to expand your search to the Greco "Korina" models as well, you will be pleased with the quality.

Maybe paranoia is contagious but I was looking at the neck going: eeeehhhhhh, I dunno.

So, I'm kind of with you on this one.

I dunno.

He may just be busy, swamped with requests, or just plain lazy.

It took a few days and two requests for me to get images.

What kind of questions did you ask?

I know you really want one of these (as do I).

I'm still thinking about it but not as hard as I was.

My comfort zone with this one isn't very high for some reason and I don't know why.

I'd definitely do it for $1500, maybe for $2K but definitely not above that.

Someone has the new high bid but it's still in the $1500s.

Nice find.

That's the one I gave up on at about $2800.

I'd have been seriously PO'd if I had paid $2800 and it showed up like this.

OK, I feel better knowing that.

Yup, he's going to have to take a loss to sell this one to me.

A big loss.

What worries me, though, is he also bought this:

Pete,
I already gave up on it. I did the research and knew that he had the pus for sale and also he purchased the "Memphis wreck" Destroyer for 500 earlier this spring. What I have to ask myself is what am I actually getting at the end of the auction, all of the original parts, some of the original parts or just the body.
Additionally, his response followed after my second request for information. Made me nervous.
As previously stated in the thread, I 'll pass.
If I am correct, that makes three of the last three high bidders at the 2800 price who have dropped out.
I Knew I'd seen that name somewhere!!!

I e-mailed this guy and told him I figured out he was the one that outbid me on this Destroyer back in June.

He 'fessed up and told me the story.

Boy, did he get screwed.

He paid immediately and the owner took 9 weeks to send him the guitar.

And then it showed up like this when it was advertised as very clean.

He said he had the lawyers on standby but never said what resulted.

After 9 weeks, I think he was probably SOL with both eBay and with PayPal.

Ouch!

I feel for the guy.

That could have been me....

There, but for the grace of God, go I.

Whew! Dodged a bullet.

Yes you did. I looked at the bidding history on that auction and you two were at it hard.

Paypal and eBay seem pretty lame regarding buyer protection. I've been hosed a few times and neither paypal or ebay did much to help. My credit card company usually is much more helpful. That is why I always pay with a credit card when I use paypal.

I wonder if his auction will even top 2,000 now.... Too bad he got hosed.

Did he say if it had its original parts or did he have to piece it together?

On Sep-12-07 at 05:10:51 PDT, seller added the following information:

UPDATE!! A NUMBER OF 'EXPERTS' HAVE COMMENTED THAT THEY BELIEVE THIS GUITAR TO BE JAPANESE SEN AND NOT KORINA... I WAS TOLD BY A KNOWLEDGEABLE LUTHIER THAT THIS WAS KORINA..I'll let you make your own decision. Still,...one amazing guitar.

Bob, it's a fishing behavior, everyone looking for the reserve price, but afraid they might actually hit it. I just won an AS103NT this week, and because I didn't want to be bothered playing around (and because I knew I could use BIN on another AS103NT in eBay shops to get one for $681) I just put a $682 bid on the one I was after. That was with three or four days to go on the auction. The same guy (I don't think he was a shill, btw) kept picking at my bid, $10 at a time, until the price was up to $550, where he gave up. I'm happy to get the guitar at $550, since I was prepared to go, literally, to $682, but I found it fascinating to watch him bidding. I don't hold anything against the guy, since for all he knew, when he put in $540, he could have topped my max price.

It's the easiest thing in the world to find any reserve on any auction... and still not place a (lasting) bid.

Let's say there's an ar500 with an opening asking price of $500 and you can see there is also a reserve. So.... you bid $1000 for example. And, let's just say the guys reserve was $900. That $1000 bid you just placed will exceed the $900 reserve and you will see that. Your bid will register in the auction and you will see the reserve was exceeded at the $900 mark. Although you bid $1000, your bid will only register at $900 in the auction view but it will bid up to your $1000 by proxy, if necessary.

In any event, once you've done this... go and retract your bid.
Now you know the reserve but... you haven't left a registered bid. It's fool-proof, works every time, there's no way around it. Call it a slight "glitch" in the ebay system. There is no way anyone can successfully hide a reserve price on ebay because of what I just indicated above.

If I really want to know what the seller's reserve price is I always just ask.

No one has turned me down yet.

I've only had a couple of people get snotty with me for asking but they did tell me what it was.

They might just as well tell me or watch me pick at the bid $10 at a time for hours....

Bob...Am I missing something? In Ex you give, if it is at a $500 opening bid, and you bid $1000 right away, it will just show up at $500, until someone else bids it up to your max bid...???? Maybe I'm green here as I never really bother with reserve auctions at all (unless their reasonable reserve, or have been met already). Do reserve auctions behave differently when you lay down a large max bid?

Jc, once you retract bid, auction goes right back to whatever it was... as if you hadn't bid at all. I think Johns is right though, if you do it too often, they'll bounce you. Silly. They should fix the glitch instead of bouncing folks who really aren't doing anything "wrong." If Ebay has it set up so this tactic can be used, why should they fault anyone for doing it? I've only done it 1x or 2x myself in many many years.

I bet he had buyers remorse right after he won that auction. Now he is just trying to break even on it. I think he is way upside down in that guitar. He'd be better to sit on it for a few years and maybe get his money out. But that is a lot to have tied up in a guitar that you are scared to play. Any more dents or dings and it will just go down. Those destroyers are hard guitars to not bonk on and into things.

He might get lucky. I was trying to sell the old archtop I bought from a guy for $200. I had listed it once with a high reserve, and bids never got higher than $250. This time, when I listed it, I didn't have a reserve and put the starting bid at $500. It sat for five days without a bid. I got off, decided I might as well keep the guitar, but first, I jacked up the starting bid to $700 and the BIN to $1000. I figured it wouldn't sell and I could just leave it on my wall. In the last few minutes, a buyer swooped in and took it for $700. So I'm very happy. (And, by the way, the buyer got a good deal too. The low appraised value I got on it was $700 to $900.)

So lightening can strike. Still, I think all the truly interested parties for this Explorer are ICW members and it's unlikely a new one is just going to wander into eBay.

That Greco is actually a much later model, and while a great guitar, is built quite differently than the earlier Ibanez/Greco models. Truss rod, wood type, pickups, tuners, construction are all different. Doesn't make it any worse, in some ways it's actually more faithful to the Gibson original.

Peter,
There are several old sayings that I could use, but I will choose the "it's not nice to fool with mother nature" kinda thing.
Look at the facts, the $2225.01 bid was a shill bid. I bid $2200.01 to see who was going to bid on it. I felt safe as the BIN was in my opinion $2750. Nobody on their right mind would give that much for this guitar (yep, I admit it when it comes to a Destroyer I am not in my right mind), but if Momo paid $1600 for a mint and I mean mint Destroyer then that is what real market should be. With that being said, I hate to wait this guy out. I think that I need to go to New Jersey and really look this thing over.

This guitar has received a lot of press lately for something that I believe is setting the bar for vintage Ibbys. How high will it go? who knows. My initial inclination is to pass at $2200 and see what happens. The buyer will be on ICW as in my opinion, I really don't think the guitar is worth that much.

Momo was in the right place at the right time for the Crazy Train Destroyer. I think he got a super bargain on that one and that someone else would have easily paid $2,500 for it. Remember the serial number of that one, because in a couple years it will come up for auction and set some records (if records will be kept, that is).

Jack -

I wasn't trying to rile you up.

I just figured you'd spring for it since the opening bid is less than what you bid last time.

I agree: about $1500-1600 is about the right price.

That's what I paid for my 75 not too long ago.

Momo is a once-in-a-lifetime occurance.

I don't ever expect to see that sort of thing again during my lifetime.

Why do you say the $2225.01 bid was a shill bid?

That bidder has 64 auction wins under their belt.

It's not really a shill bid anyway since their bid didn't hit the reserve.

A shill bid artificially inflates the price of the item.

Granted, the current auction bid was raised but the price of taking the Destroyer home didn't go up because the reserve price was still the reserve price and hadn't been met.

Ergo, no shill bid.

I'm passing as well but I think some of the bidders from the last auction(s) will snipe for it.

The NOS one was worth way more than what was paid for it. A great score due to the fixed price. On ebay, the sky would have been the limit for that guitar.

Thanks, Chuck.

Yeah, if that one had hit eBay I would have gone to $3K easy.

You know, though, at the same time I would have been paranoid like crazy thinking I was buying one of those $200 Chinese knock-offs.

I haven't seen any V's or Destroyers on the Chinese site, so I think we're safe.

CJ, Chaz, I read this thread (and many others these days) top to bottom, and other than "Ducati"s brief input on "differences", I learn nothing about the guitar...100+ posts and nothing.

...just blowin air about sellers........again. What a major f****** yawn in my not-so-humble-opinion.

"rip" = zip.

Makes me wonder if you guys know what one of these sound like. Perhaps it's all implied and I just flat out missed it.

oh, and no, I was havin' a good day - good week, thanks for askin'!

Yes, I was speaking of the Destroyer from The Gear Page. I would imagine the demand for it would drive the price way up. Over $3000 without a problem.

I see no reason to be paranoid about counterfeits. There are so many tells on these Ibanez Destroyers, and so many idiosyncracies, it would pretty dang hard to make a convincing knockoff. The hardware for one thing would be very tough to get the same material and appearance. Just look at the back of the headstock for the wood joints, that's a very specific aspect of the construction that would take a lot of time to fake. Plus, the case! Very hard to duplicate the outer covering, the spidery paper stuff they used.

And I don't think these guitars are valuable enough to counterfeit (at least not yet, the way you guys are going!).

While I don't like it when threads get very long (the Announcing the 2007 Reissue one is so long, I won't even try to open it anymore) there is a value to these endless discussions on eBay pricing and authenticity. I've learned a great deal from them, especially how to take a breath when a new guitar pops on the Bay, and take a good, critical look at it before putting in a bid. I also like the discussions around condition, originality of hardware, etc.

Keep the eBay discussions coming!
