Replacement pickups for Musicians

Author Message   Bambusa Username: Bambusa Registered: 9-2007 Posted on Monday, September 17, 2007 - 6:15 am:    Hey I know I posted a few days ago about pickup heights etc. I'm looking now to replace the Super70s with an aftermarket set of something whilst this guitar is being played regularly. This is just so I can get the balance right without having the neck one all trebly and thin sounding and the bridge one nearly touching the strings. Realising that these pickups are three hole mounts - what is out there that I can replace them with??   Guitarwhisperer Username: Guitarwhisperer Registered: 6-2007 Posted on Monday, September 17, 2007 - 11:23 pm:    The musician pickups are direct mounted into the wood. Most standard pickups are mounted in rings that are screwed to the face of the guitar. However, a competent repairman should be able to direct mount a standard set of pickups into the cavities without ruining the instrument, so that when the original pickups are reinstalled the instrument does not look modified. The only permanent modification will be invisible, and that would be the holes drilled into the body in the pickup cavity for the pickup screws. The trick on the musicians would be getting the pickup angled parallel to the strings. I accomplish that with wedge shaped shims. Most pickup manufacturers make matched sets of pickups, balanced for even output. The seymour duncan jazz set sounds good in the musicians, but if you want high output the duncan distortion set is very good. Your pickups may be defective, I don't seem to have quite that extreme an imbalance on my musician. Is the neck pickup thin at all heights? If so, it's coils may be wired out of phase, or perhaps the bridge pickup has a weak magnet? Has the pickup ever been out of the guitar and dropped? Impacts can scatter the molecules in the magnets, weakening their magnetic field. Both pickups measure the same so my guess is they are both fine. I have a phase switch to change the phase of the neck ones and the difference is noticeable so thats probably not it. I think at the end of the day I am better off leaving it be as is and picking up a newer Artist or similar as my main gigging guitar.
