Artist 2930 - Looking for Repair Advice

Author Message   Fontadoni Username: Fontadoni Registered: 9-2007 Posted on Saturday, October 13, 2007 - 11:48 pm:    Hello there. I need some advice regarding my 1976 Artist 2930. I bought this guitar about a year ago. The guitar had a neck repair but I had no problems whatsoever, it plaid nicely and always stayed in tune. Unfortunately on my last plane trip the guitar ended up with a cracked neck (long story). This is my best guitar and I definitely want to get it repaired, however, I'm not sure how to proceed with this. The guy from the shop where I usually take my guitars for a set up, said he could do it. He told me it would be around $200-$250 for a neck re-set. I want this job done right. Should I look for a real luthier to do this? Should I let this guy from the shop repair it? Does the price sound reasonable for this kind of job? Of course, some pics of the guitar and the neck would be of help. I will upload some pics later, but feel free to tell me what you think. If you're talking about neck seperation from the body along the existing neck join lines then it's do-able by any suitably experienced guitar tech (and I do mean suitably experienced...We're not talking about soldering in new pickups!..)..But if the crack runs lengthways or has entered the truss rod cavity I'd REALLY recommend going to a luthier....Bad cracks like that can be repaired , but more often than not at the cost of a certain reduction in sustain....Best of luck..hope the airline is prepared to contribute towards it...   Fontadoni Username: Fontadoni Registered: 9-2007 Posted on Sunday, October 14, 2007 - 12:23 am:    Yes, it is a neck separation like the one you described, from the body along the existing neck join lines. I'm not sure about the truss rod cavity, but I don't think it went that far. I actually have a hydraulic glue injector that can force glue throughout the crack. I just recieved an AR500 from France, has the same crack in it, I'm going to repair it myself. With proper clamping, my guitar will be structurally sound again, with no loss of sustain, and the glue I use is stronger than the original wood grain. Clamping is the key. I have extensive woodworking experience, and know how to clamp wood for maximum strength. There's a thread in the Miscellaneous section entitled "My workshop and my first neckthrough". Check out the guitar in the thread, I made it a long time ago. I use the same glue to repair necks as I used to glue that thing together, it's rock solid. Ask the guy if he has any pictures or examples of his work. I know a few other techies in this area who wouldn't have the first clue about how to fix a neck crack, even though they would take the work in. I have pictures of the services I offer, before and after, as well as examples of structural repairs I've done in the past. For example: Before and after.
