Gorgeous.

I was going to make the joke: "Mud on the case? Send it back!"

BTW, the V should be in my hands by Friday. I see you've removed the protective paper from the pickguard, as I plan to do for my V. Does anyone have an opinion about that? Should I leave it on?

I guess that definitively answers the "case lining" question, too.

Blue is also original.

Do you happen to know where that train wreck happened?

At least, in what state?

I'm just kind of curious as to whether yellow lined cases were sent to the East Coast and the blue lined cases to the West Coast.

Thanks,

Did you guys like the long tenon neck fit?...I liked to see the sawdust still in the cavities, but I realized that they really had 1000+ a month to do, so evrything is whizzing by with no place for error, build is top notch, but you get the feeling everything was put together very fast.
Sounds real good anyway

Right, I get it now,....sorry, my head was spinning all day yesterday.....so ya maybe they split the colors east coast west coast, but that seems like alot of work for no particular reason I guess.
I vacumed the lining and was really pleased to find in the compartment a "Kit" with a truss rod allen key,a key for the latch lock and a bridge adjustment thing that ive never seen before, so it is really like Its 1976 and I just bought a new guitar!

The guitars were salvaged by the father of the woman selling them. If he lived where she does now (and, since the guitars were in her attic, it may be safe to assume she's living in her dad's old house) then I believe the wreck was somewhere outside of Buffalo, New York. There are train track running through the town, going east/west, so the train could have been bound for either Buffalo or Rochester. We'll never know the ultimate destination (FINAL destination?) of the guitars, though. Those tracks probably run west to Chicago and beyond and east all the way to Boston. Maybe we can have a CSI unit do some forensics on the mud on the case?

Also, Jonathan (the seller's agent) has just posted that the 2355 has been sold. Did someone here get it?

Reproducing the post:

Hey guys,
My mother's best friend came to me with these guitars. Her father used to work for the railroad company cleaning up train wrecks. Back in late 1970 there was a car carrying these guitars, and when the train wrecked, he saved these 5 before having to bulldoze the rest to the ground.

As you can see these are MINT, most with the paper still covering the pickguards. All come with the original cases. If you have any questions, or are interested at all, please let me know! Also, prices are listed with each guitar, but i have a little room to negotiate.

Someone snag that 2351 LP!!!

Momo, Chuck, you guys are now caretakers of amazing pieces of history. I can't really believe these "NOS" guitars existed, but every once in a while the most amazing things happen.

You should try to get a letter from the woman who had these... I'm trying to decide, if I were you guys, what I'd do with these unbelievable pieces. You have to find a way to display the cases just as much as the guitars, guys.

Find some used railway car and attach it to your house or something. :-)

Chazmo, man Im starting to feel the pressure!...in the sense that I want to play this babe and it would be played as often as my strat, but now im wondering if I should play it....a letter from the Lady would in fact be a good thing, adding mojo to the pile already there.
Aw, ill play it!, in fact I have been playing it alot since 2 days, it already feels great, my body has gelled with it and its very comfortable, all this tone, feel, and comfort on the neck, makes me play like I never did before!...so I doubt that I would put it in a glass "jar/timecapsule"!
In fact, that was what was missing (real great tone), to start my band....people are already writing in.....all this new energy in my life,so yea, my Destroyer will be active!
Cheers

Momo, Ibanez guitars were meant to be played! More power to you. Try to keep it mint, and make sure you bring this to some collector's gatherings in the future. :-)

No matter what you do to it now, it's got intense mojo being recovered from a wreck and kept "NOS" for 30 years. I just still can't get over that.

Knowing how freight is shipped, I would guess there might have been a pallet of guitars, but probably not a train car full. And that pallet likely would have been in a mail car, where the climate is more controlled, than in a freight car.

Today, immense amounts of freight go by rail. And they do have crashes. Imagine you're the claims guy at BNSF, and you have to call JB Hunt and tell them your train had a crash overnight and 200 of their loaded trailers are now lying in a pile of wreckage in New Mexico.

Unlike most truckers, I think that all freight that CAN go by rail should go by rail, but right now, our rail system is just about at capacity.

However, the whole story sound a little fishy to me (and, I suspect, to others). My real suspicion is that these guitars were stolen out of a shipment, then hidden long enough to let the heat die down.

But you never know; sometimes the truth is just too hard to believe!

Mrblanche!, I love this, OK lets do some forensics!
After coming off my Destroyer cloud, I started exploring every inch of the guitar and case....here is what I found on the case that looks like an impact....
I can confirm that it was not done in shipping....the exterior box had nothing on it...so this must be a hard and rapid impact as these cases are pretty tough, well Id be curious to hear what you guys think, I feel that was done from the train impact....!!!
Oh and a good part of case has dried mud on it!,not a inch high, but you feel it has been at least in alot of dust, nothing like that on the inside
Cheers

My first Ibanez had to be ordered from a music store. Ordered in 1976, I waited a year. The delay, I was told, was because of a train wreck carrying Ibanez guitars including mine. The guitar had to be reordered.

After waiting a year, I found one at another store in 1977.

Craig, are you serious? What part of the country are (or were) you in? The northeast?

Could John's inside sources at Ibanez confirm any of this? (Though I hope they don't want the guitars back!)

I'm less suspicious about the theft scenario, since, why steal guitars only to stash them away in your attic, never to be sold? I guess you could ask the same about salvaging them: Why just leave them in the attic?

Just as a guess, I'd say that in the original scenario, the rail worker that took the guitars - technically - did steal them.

They belonged to either the shipper, receiver or to the insurance company.

So they stayed in the attic until the heat was off or because he was scared or ashamed or...

"Craig, are you serious? What part of the country are (or were) you in? The northeast? "

I'm in Cleveland Ohio and the guitars were being shipped from Pennsylvania. That gives us a 2 state perimiter for the crash (assuming it was a direct route), and a year most likely being 1976. Yes, I'm totally serious. Exactly what the music store owner told me.

So here's a recap on my examination of the guitar. It's pretty cool to have a guitar this old, and yet, literally brand new. But then again, those strings are 30 years old and have been tight and pulling on the neck for that long. The neck looked bowed back a bit, and when I put new strings on it, there was serious buzzing at the lower frets. Sighting down the neck, I can detect a bit of a twist as well. I was beginning to get bummed out, but I got out the truss rod allen wrench and did a bit of adjusting, and it cured the buzz as well as the perceived twist. Go figure. I'm going to bring the guitar to my tech (or, more accurately, the tech at the guitar store I use) for a better setup. The only real flaw on the guitar is on the headstock, at the D tuner, where it looks like air got under the clearcoat. One of the pictures above shows it pretty clearly. Otherwise this thing is MINT MINT MINT. Did I mention it's MINT? It sounds freakin' fantastic. It's exactly as I remember it feeling when I owned one in 1976/77.

Cuck nice guitar. The only thing is how did that make it past QC without being stamped as a second with the finish flaw at the headstock? Well anyway nice score dude. I would love to have one like that.

Chuck!, ya man its beutiful, now is it your camera or is the color that dark?...I absolutly love it like in the pictures, it has high contrast between the wood color and the black and gold.
Gotta love those super 70's huh!
The strings on mine were loosened out, don't know if that is recent or original from the factory. I like to think they knew what they were doing and the strings should be loose for transport....so maybe because of the shape of the guit, it had a bit of attention from the train guy, and he did not reloosen the strings after playing...
I also have to say, this is my first set neck guitar and well, you know that manual vibrato trick some dudes do with an acoustic, where they "bend the neck" and it gives a bit of vibrato using the neck...now I did not try this, but noticed that its pretty easy to change the pitch of an open string by applying minimal pressure.
Is this normal on a set neck?...it seems to me that my strat bolt on is more rigid at the neck.
Im thinking I have to see my Destroyer as a guitar to be careful with the neck pressure. Is this normal?...it does not go out of whack if I play agressively, you have to deliberatly put pressure on the neck, but its so littlee pressure...
Anyway, congrats on that piece of history!

The gold plating is pretty dark. The bridge is actually more "orange" than either the V-thing or the pickup covers, too.

Did you see the picture of the stuff that was in the case? There's a slip of paper with "Not Bent" on it. It's an old xerox copy.

As far as tone bending when the neck bends, yes, that happens, at least with the guitars with necks as slim as these. But it can happen with any guitar if you try hard enough. I think Strat necks are made of much harder wood.

Hmmm, I had that same little bag with the truss rod /bridge tools. That audio cord could prove to be a good find also, if youre lucky or like that sound, you could 'Jimify' your tone....these old cables usually have a high end loss that is one of the basics in Hendrix sound. He used coiled cables, but I would not be surprised if that worked too for that kind of tone, its worth a try!
I wonder what No dent means, I guess usually, you would want to identify the odd one WITH a dent or two!,Im trying to understand QC with a note like that and the finish on the headstock.
Anyway, I dont know how you feel about the finish,I personally would not mind, as to me the killer stuff on there that is imposible to recreate with new stuff would be the amazing super 70 pups. I LOVE old magnets!

"This is AMAZING! John, I think we need to get Hoshino USA on the horn here! Craig should get a free AR5000re just for his troubles."

Oh, I'd LOVE an AR5000re. That would surely make me forget about waiting a year for my first Ibanez !!!
