I didn't expect to see Sure Grips on a 2405CA.
But perhaps Dave_G can tell more about whether this replacement choice was right or not. The 2405CAs I know (mostly sunbursts) all have witch hat knobs.

Interesting guitar....Transition model,,it has the "Bug" headstock inlay (indicative of the later models), no belly cut out (indicative of earlier models). The color looks to be cherry, not burg-which is usually darker. Nice guit -easily resotored...The sure Grips are all wrong though-should be witch hats.
The BIN is actually quite resonalble consitering the condition and rarity of the color. I'd venture to say that a BIN of $1000 would have been scarfed up already....NICE NEW CASE TOO !

Too bad about that hole drilled in the face. That's what stopped me from buying it :-).

This is a nice rare color transition model. Notice the bug inlay on a pre-serial. As Ginger stated, the knobs would have been witch hats. Not a bad estimation on that pickguard, either.

Just another example of the fallacy of eBay. Think about the people who have bid on an item, registering a bid, a binding contract with the Seller and opening up an exhibition of the free market system concept of supply/demand economics, only to be shot down by a money grubbing, non willing, deceiving and albeit civil criminal who changes his mind and makes a side deal.
The only silver lining is the fact that the sell price is not published and the CAs don't become over inflated in price like the Destroyers are.
Load of horseshit if you ask me.

Cleversj:

I think you make a valid point, however, in this case, there were no prior bids and a potential buyer struck a deal with the seller.

No harm, no foul.

Clevers...What the F are you blithering about ? I sorta understand your point, however in this case the seller had a BIN price on the "auction" -which makes the moniker "auction" a falicy to begin with .
I don't think that a sellers desire to sell an item makes them "money grubbing, non willing, deceiving and albeit civil criminal who changes his mind and makes a side deal."
"Auctions" that have a BIN aren't really an auction to begin with and are not "an exhibition of the free market system concept of supply/demand economics" rather they are simply a posting of an item and a desired price.

What is really confusing to me is that in an effort to comply with our percieved interpretation of EBAY, we loose sight of its purpose...namely to match a seller to a buyer.

If you had bothered to research before blithering about economic theroy, you would have seen that the auction was relisted and the price can be viewed by all. I negotiated a lower BIN price, and the seller felt more comfortable doing the sale thru EBAy and had to relist to provide the lower BIN number-no conspiracy, no "money grubbing", no decieving at all...Just a buyer and seller striking a deal on a fixed price item.....

yeah, I think in general, Clevers, in certain cases you have a point, but not in this individual case. When he relisted, there was a chance anyone could of bought it. It was open to the public, just Dave had inside info to be ready.

There are obviously different ways to run a item on Ebay...And a BIN is not technically an auction at all! So nothing wrong here at all, on any level. Just another well negotiated BIN.

Look. It's better off with Dave anyway as he as the bits and the knowledge to sort the thing out.

Let us know if the colour is original Dave. Personally I think it has faded out.

Hey Dave,

Did you see this seller is offering 4 Sure Grip ONE knobs for $160.- now? If they are the ones in the pic, they are actually YOURS now...

gentlemen,
I have received quite a response to my personal email about my "blithering" on a lost opportunity on eBay.

First: I am very HAPPY that a vintage guitar was purchased by an ICW member and might remain in its current or better condition because of that fact.

Second: My correspondence with the Seller was not answered. IF you knew the content, you'd be upset too!

Third: Look at Gingers revelation and ask yourself, is this guy legitimate? or a money grubbing criminal (Hint: Answer honestly)

Fourth: I apologize to anyone whose feelings I have hurt by my response.

Ahh...a little jealousy eh?! Sounds like you may of had a similar idea?!

I have dealt with this seller before...in the past, I did not like the outcome of what happened in my case. But that is just the way the cookie crumbles sometimes. Im sure all will be well on this BIN.

As for the knobs on ebay, maybe it was part of the lowered price, maybe it was different knobs altogether, how can you jump to conclusions?????

Ginger et Al...Before we go an bash this guy please understand that I let him have the suregrips as part of the negotiation. He has spent a ton of money "restoring" this CA by purchasing parts on EBay. Understanding that the sure grips are not the proper knobs for this guitar, seeing that he bought the knobs on EBay from a parts jackal AND the fact that I have a whole drawer full of them, I told him he could keep them as part of the deal...I imagine that he is selling them now to attempt to recoup some of the cash that he was expecting to get for the guitar. I don't know the history, but he seems like a nice fella and is experienced at EBay....I'm not feeling any sort of sleeze here at all...

Six..its original, just not Burg..its Cherry....

I didn't see another listing of this guitar and a lower BIN, but I wrote "if [...]". Maybe Dave suggested to list the knobs separately and lower the BIN. Only he can answer that.
But witch hat knobs are less difficult to find in our parts bins than Sure Grip ONE knobs. So, that would have been a wise suggestion, IF he's not interested in the Sure Grip knobs. And we know that Dave recently gave away one or two of them to the Kid, so making money with too expensive knobs is NOT Dave's core business so to say...
He's a generous man...

John, Its cherry for sure, same as the other one I have...There are some real unusual things about it..this guitar did have a serial number at one time, it has been sanded off during what is a very professional (and very good) scroll repair. What is interesting is that this guitar has a fretboard stamp of Z17.....

I don't think we have ever seen a fretbord stamp on such a late production guitar (I figure this to be either a late '76 or early '77)

I've already re wired the guitar with a new harness and removed the Switchcraft switch and the on board "power boost" . I replaced the pickups with a matched set of S70's and this guitar is good to go.
It has a bunch of new parts (bridge, stop, brass nut, strap pegs, volume pot, tuners) and an extra hole ("boost switch") so shes not a museum piece, but is an excellent player...
