Ebay Item #110194884628 I don't remember ever seeing an Artist model bass in any catalog. Is this for real? |

Here are the pictures, as I think this is a rare one. (I just checked all the catalogs I can find again and didn't see it.) -Chuck |

The serial number starts E77... so manufactured in May of 1977, it is conceivable it would not have appeared in catalogs until 1978. Now, here's an interesting picture of a GOB700 Bass by Greco, from their 1978 catalog. It is the closer to the body shape of the eBay bass than is the Musician or even Studio bass, and it has three control knobs in nearly the same place, and has through-body strings. Hmmm. -Chuck |

Once again, because I refuse to go to bed at a reasonable hour, I have answered my own question. This is the 2626B Artist bass. In 1977 it had the pickups same as the model on eBay, and by 1978, it had pickups more similar to Musician pups. I found a whole messa pics at the Ibanez registry, including a catalog page scan: 1977: 1978: Headstock: -Chuck |

Hi Chuck, I just woke up... You did a nice job finding these pics. Nice to see the original tuners too... They're kind of odd, don't you think? How the h... are they attached to the headstock? Ginger |

Ginger - Take a look at the bottom left headstock picture. You can see the hex nuts if you look closely. - Pete |

On the bass on eBay, there are two holes you can see at each tuner, on the back of the headstock. My guess is that there are bumps on the underside of the original tuners that fit into those holes and that holds them in place. |

Chucke's right - the originals look like copies of Schaller M4S tuners, which have pegs on the backplate to hold them straight. The generic looking ones on the Ebay bass have smaller posts & don't fit the headstock drillings properly - there are extra washers underneath the hex bushings so they don't fall through the holes. I found one locally earlier this year. It's all original. The huge pickups magnets give this bass a nice sound. Playing with the tone knobs and switching pickups I can achieve all kinds of tones from ''Ricky'' to subterranean marshmalow. |
