Glad to have found this site. You guys have some great info here. I bought a Musician at a local music store about 12 years ago. It seemed like a steal at the time. I had never seen one before, but a $250 price tag on a neck thru guitar with the preamp and all seemed worth it. I love the guitar and have been playing it ever since. I'm not sure what the year and model are though. I think it's a '78 MC500. The serial no. on the back of the headstock is 6787734. The only complaint I have about the guitar is that it is noisy, especially with the preamp switched on. Is this normal for these or is there a potential problem? Thanks for any info. |

Here's some more info on the guitar. Has the coil split switches and 3 band eq. Why did they ever use brown pickup covers? |

Can you post a photo of your guitar here? I think you can find info on how to do that on the home page. |

Yeah, you've got yourself a great MC-500 from June of 78. Those brown pickups would be original Super 58's (I beleive) - and are not your typical sized humbuckers but rather extra wide -- and the route accomodates its width. The 3 way tri-sound switch would be humbucker/coil split/ and out of phase for each pickup. And yes, these guitars do have natural saturated noise to them, and beleive me the preamp buffer (read: boost) doesn't help that. My 550 is notoriously noisly, but in a live setting chances are you are the only one who would notice and the tones that you can get out of these great guitars outweighs any negative aspects I can think of. The biggest downside for me would be it's weight -- I needed to get a customized strap made for my 550 to help displace the weight when I wear it. |

It's missing the truss rod cover plate. What are the chances of finding one? |

Dude $250 is a major score on this axe. Congrats. yours is actually an mc500ds (ds = dark stain) (nt = natural finish) as opposed to the mc500nt that I have. Ever wanna sell it.... please let me know. It's hard to tell, looks like the top of the guitar is arched. If it is... it's mc500. If not...mc400. |

I'll take 4 at that price! Thats a beauty. Welcome to ICW Kfran1234! I'm sure you can find a truss rod cover for it somewhere here. Try the classified section. |

Thanks guys. Anyone try doing a good shielding job on one of these to cut the noise? |

Wouldn't his serial number start with an F for june. Why is this a 6? |

I was wondering that too when I started looking at how to break down the serial no. Maybe it's extra special. |

It's probably a "G", not a "6". Ace Congrats, you did good. |

Someone told me that if you run a pencil eraser around the edge of the aluminum that's probably in the body cavity where the circuit board is, that that may cut down the noise a bit. I don't know if it will, that's just some advice a guitar tech gave me. |
