When I look at a late 70's Artist, Performer or Concert in Antigue Violin finish and compare it to later years, the edge of the burst appears less pronounced. And other areas on the top look mottled with dark stain. Anybody else notice this?
I wonder if they were staining them by hand in the early days rather than spraying them? Or maybe it was the quality of the grain in the maple, maybe? |

i just picked up a 1977 2618 in av finish and i have to agree with you on at that one.
it came with a smooth neck heel and flying finger pickups with brass plates on the back instead of the normal plastic.also has the bone/brass nut and has abalone dots instead of mother of pearl.
besides all of that,the first thing i noticed was that the front and back appear to be hand stained.
none of the later sunburst models that i own look like that one.
i can't wait to get all these pic's done so i can post them.
by the way,i stumbled into a custom agent too!does not have the vine inlay,it is identical to the one on page 147 of guitar stories vol.1.
i also have another 77 artist coming but with the block heel.
seems ibanez was not consistant with the neck joint thing since i have them both ways 5 years apart.

What's the serial number on that smooth-heel '77. The letter prefix must be pretty high up which would designate it as late-in-the-year production.
Every '77 I've seen has the block heel. Really not a bad neck joint at all, but that smooth heel is totally awesome!
There are 3 different "Artist" heels that I know of: Block (earliest '77), Original Smooth (obviously late '77 - early '79) and Modern Smooth ('79-'80??? to present).
It would be nice to pinpoint when the Antique Violin finish went from a stain-like to spray-on. Does your new '77 have much flame to the maple? Gold-plated, kidney bean shaped tuners, or MOP?
On the CA: does it have a clear pickguard? What's the serial number? I'll guess '77.
Hey Maniac, save some Ibanezes for the rest of the world. I see you've been after AS200s, AM255s and AF200s. I should have never told you about ebay! J |

the 77 artist was made in october.has gold tuners and cloud tailpiece w/ibanez engraved as well as the brass sustain block.the gold on this one is like new with slight wear on the left side of the bridge only.tuners are kidney bean shape w/pat.pend.in the center.
custom agent has the clear guard on it.i have not yet picked it up.(saturday up close & personal)
also recieved ar205 burl finish with dot inlays.very nice with gold cloud and velvetune tuners.all the plating looks like new.its a 83 and has a nice smooth neck heel but not as nice as the 77.
don't worry about about me getting all the ibanez guitars,those am255's i wanted exceeded what i was willing to pay. i just wanted 3 different burled models to sit and stare at.they are so pretty and it's your fault i got hooked!(after seeing yours)
i'll sort out all of these guitars in a few months and offer them on this site through the classified section after we take all the pictures.
i'll need a panoramic shot to fit them all but that way everyone can see whats available when the time comes.
i will probably keep the top ten if i can.
you guys are right about how hard it'll be to sell them when you love them all!!

A '77 with a block heel and the sustain block under the bridge? That's a combo I haven't seen/heard of yet.
The only AM205 I've seen and played had a stunning top/back and finish. In every picture I've seen of them they always look fantastic! It's still baffling that they weren't bigger items with pro players.
So how many have you collected, so far? |

The '77 with the sustain block is a smooth heel.
I'm still waiting for the '77 w/ block heel.
(The SELLER SAID it has a brass sustain block under the bridge)
As far as how many i've collected so far, 21 ibanez,3 gibsons,3 fenders,1 yamaha,and a univox L.P. copy with correct copy(open book) headstock.
Do you have any idea how hard it is to hide 15 guitars!!
I'll be sure to update about the '77 w/block heel.
Could be that I'll be the blockhead for believing the seller.
We'll see..........
