Well, alot of the names on this site are quite familiar to alot of folks now. I thought it would be interesting to know what we all are using these vintage Ibanez guitars for. Specifically, what music we play with these guitars. I don't know if anyone else is interested, but I am so.... here goes.... I use my 1978 Musician mc500nt mostly for originals (I've written over 700 songs) but... when I play other peoples stuff, I use the mc500nt on... mostly Classic Rock type stuff with some Blues stuff, and I guess some weirder stuff too like Zappa and old Pink Floyd. I use alot of open tunings and the mc500 holds up pretty good when I do the old Crosby/Stills/Nash/Young stuff. What are you guys playing on your Ibanez axes? |

Well, I am still pretty new to collecting Ibanez so my instruments haven't filtered into my live rig yet. But, my '94 Talman has seen some service doing live blues and performed admirably. My double neck AR 1200 is about to be used on a heavy rock studio session and I will let you know how that goes. It seems to have the biggest sound of all my guitars, the six string sound just jumps out of the amp and makes a small amp sound like a huge stack cranked all the way up! I guess it has something to do with the ridiculously large single piece of ash- it really makes it "kick ash"!! |

looks like the inside of a hive, a good setting for the old blues song "King Bee". Nice guitars too! |

I play a variety of stuff on a variety of Ibanez guitars. I lean more towards blues-rock, and they all handle that genre well. But, I do have my gear set up for maximum versatility, so if I want to just do some clean strumming or some searing soloing, I can do that. Depending on my mood, you might find me doing something Fogerty, or Black Sabbath, or 50's rock, or... I like everything except for the rap stuff. My turntable is reserved for playing entire songs at the correct speed!! LOL! I found that one of the best sounds to my ears is my 1983 RS505 with stock pickups running the middle and bridge pickup in series (a non-stock wiring). It sounds tame compared to the single coils individually, but really pours out a ballsy, fat tone without getting mushy. Great for hot overdrive stuff. |

I play fusion on my solid bodies, with some classic rock and funk mixed in. I can't say that I use vintage solid bodies. I have an '81 AR100, but the SC420 and SV470 get the most use. I am currently studying jazz with a private teacher, and starting to make some headway, which feels really good. It's been much harder to find a guitar that suits the jazz side. I'm not really sure if I'm an L5 kind of guy. I've been through various guitars, including an FG100, and have settled, for now anyway, on an '04 AG195, which is the few jazz guitars that actually sounds like a jazz guitar to me -Sven |

Hi guys Funkle - Under a thread on the LP forum, something like ‘can you play Jazz on a Les Paul’ I mentioned that when they first launched the LP in 1952 Rock’n’Roll hadn’t even begun. They were designed in the Big band era of Jazz etc. An Ibanez LP should therefore be OK to play Jazz. I’ve been getting a nice jazz type feel out of my old modified Blazer on the neck pickup but I think it’s more about attack than the guitar. Personally I’ll play anything depending on the mood I’m in Quote from Simpsons – ‘You don’t play Blues to cheer yourself up, it’s to make everyone else as miserable as you are’ |

True, and there are plenty of guys who play jazz on solid bodies, and some get a very beautiful full tone. I'd also argue that in the 50s some players may have preferred a brighter tone to cut through a big band. Everyones definition of a "jazz tone" is different. It's just a matter of finding the tone that I hear in my head. Honestly I really don't care what kind of guitar it comes from - I am not a traditionalist. And even if I find the perfect tone tomorrow, I will probably continue to experiment and tweak for the rest of my life |
