hey guys i recently bought a near mint ar50bk http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7324965507&rd=1&sspagename =STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1 i had it less than 5 hours when i decided that it needed to be set up. it was obvious that the nut needed to be raised so i went about the task....little did i know that the nut has binding all the way across it! i cut the binding nice and square (referencing off my ar305 thats had the job done from a previous owner), and for 4 hours i used 4 thou feeler gauge, some sergical style razors, and i still cant get the bastard off! can anyway please let me know how these things are put on, and the best way for removing them?? I have cut down the fretboard side of the nut, and also the headstock side. its quite annoying as ive already put more scratches and chips in the guitar than its had in 25 years! help on this would be much appreciated! also a few things i saw....the frets have a green (looks like loctite green) around the edges of them....is this the original glue?? from the binding it defiantly does not look like fret have been replaced?? something funny too, when i was tapping the nut to get it off, one of my tuning pegs fell out ok ive never had velve tuners before, how do i keep these things in the machine heads?? they all come out quite easily and im afraid ill loose one playing a gig or something.... ahh the joy of setting up a guitar, anyway guys anny advice on these matter would be greatly appreciated. i would have taken it to a luther if i new that it would be this hard to get the nut off, but now i think im most of the way there. cheers blue |

Hey Blue! The nut shouldn't be that hard to remove. The only glue holding it in should be on the bottom surface of the nut. No need to saw down the front and back. To break the glue joint you need to hit (tap) the nut with a small drift. Tap towards the headstock, then towards the fretboard, back and forth untill she starts to move. Then you should be able to pull it out. You could have filled the nut slots with a mixture of bone dust and glue and re shaped the string slots to what you need instead of shiming the nut up. Hope this helps. |

hey soul thanks for the advice! i tried tapping the nut with a well insulated hammer it broke part of the bone on the nut so i was a little hesitant banging it. i will get some more tools from work today and give it another try tonight. with the issue of not having to cut down the side of the nut, i looked like the headstock finish actually connected with the nut....so i thaught its better to cut it clean then bang the nut and take off the headstock finish in chucks. after all the surgeon like cutting, the nut still didnt budge, it seems that this one is glued in very well!! yeh i thaught about the glue on top of the nut idea, in hignsight, i probably should have gone with that option and kept the nice binding down the side....live and learn! |
