I would like some help dating this Ibanez Korina V. First off, you can see pictures of it at http://www.mcilvanity.com/ibanez.html This is a guitar I bought used in about 1991 from a shop on Sunset Blvd. for $350 as I recall. I never changed anything on it, except the bridge (see bellow.) One pickup was covered with a gold cover, now tarnished, the other uncovered. There are some dings where it looks like someone played it wearing a spiked bracelet. (probably an 80's metal band. The name "The Zeros" was stenciled on the case when I bought it.) The bridge is replaced, but I have the original. One of the saddles fell out in the grass at a gig and was lost, and the shop I took it too could not match it so they put this one on, which looks bad, I know. That was before the internet though. Now I plan to find a new saddle and restore it. If anyone knows where I can find a replacement, or the specs to look for, I'd appreciate that information. As for dating the guitar, there is no serial number on the outside. It differs from other Ibanez V's that I've seen in that the back of the headstock is not black, and it has no rubber strip on the bottom of the V. The guitar plays great, with a wide flat neck and a good sound. I've included a picture of the inside of the case. Does it look like an original case? Also, how can I polish up the gold (brass?) on it. Any information would be appreciated. If you need any other pictures, let me know. Thanks, Greg |

Greg, With no serial I'd say '74.Maybe early '75.I'm not sure exactly when the serials started. Also,I've noticed that early production models didn't have the rubber on the sides yet.I believe that may have started around '76. The case is original, same blue as my korina Destroyer case. I believe the hardware is plated so there really isn't much you can do to bring it back. There was a thread on here somewhere about someone who did the service of replating though.I'll see if I can find it. |

Hi Greg! Your V is an early one (no serial number, so 1974 or the first half of 1975) and because of the correct scratchplate (going under the bridge instead of around the treble side bridge stud) I can see you have one of the very earliest ones. Must be a 1974, because I own a non-serial V with the newer scratchplate, probably from first half of 1975. The neck pickup could be a replacement, maybe it's an original with the cover removed. If you change the strings next time you might have a look at the bottom plate and tell us if there is any inscription. I also noticed that the pickup is mounted the wrong way: the adjustable polescrews should be at the neck's side. Don't know if it affects the sound (Gary Moore has the neck pickup also reversed in his ex-Peter Green Les Paul and keeps it that way because he is afraid that turning the pup around correctly it might change the unique sound) but you could try that too, once the pickup is out to check the bottom. The gold hardware is not to be polished: you'd only take more off. That's always the trouble with Ibanez' "gold" hardware. It comes off very easily, especially when the guitar is used a lot. You should put back on the original bridge, though. This one looks ugly. If you shouldn't succeed in finding a correct saddle for the original bridge, than maybe you should replace the whole unit by a similar type. Finally I'll put on a few pictures that shows the both versions of the scratchplate. Kind greetz, Harry This is the old version (1974) This is the newer style from early 1975 until 1978 |

I bought a new bridge and installed it with a new set of strings. She plays great, very flat neck. There is a link to where I got the bridge and a new picture of it installed at http://www.mcilvanity.com/ibanez.html |

Looks like the original zebra Super 70 to me with the cover off. I have a couple just like it. Snazzy huh? six |

Six, I do not think that's an super70. As far as I know all Ibanez zebra's have the adjustable polepieces in the white bobbin. This one has the adjustables in the black bobbin if I see correct. Paul |

Hey Six, Is it the same Scruggs in the two pics? One pic seems to have a zebra neck and a covered bridge pup and on the other pic it is the other way around. If, heaven forbid, you have two, you really need to sell me at least one. Today! No excuses please! Back to our discussion: so those are/that is a zebra super 70 with the adjustable polepieces in the black bobbin. I can't see that in the pics but I assume you installed them/it correct with the adjustables on the "outside" of the pups. I am truly baffled! I haven't re-checked all my zebra pups yet but as far as I (thought) I knew they only came in one way, that is exactly the other way around as Gibson/SD/DiMarzio. Quite easy to recognize. Thanks for correcting me! Paul |

No correction Paul, just proof that those Ibanez guys mucked about with different ways of doing things way back then. No, I don't have 2 Scruggs and yes, the screw adjusters are on the outside. I think I swapped the pickups around that time or whatever. That pic with the Artwood twin was taken a long time ago in my old house so at least 10 years ago. six |
