To all of those more knowledgeable than I am in this area, what would be fair market value for this guitar? (I feel credit card debt coming on.)

Arney,
Better have a good excess limit. I think this ones a sham. Your bidding against a zero bidder who has not bought anything in over a year. I think the seller is propping up his own reserve in a big way.

Dear Snowjays
I am the owner of the guitar you are talking about. Let me ASSURE YOU that I have no idea who the zero bidder is and that I am not 'propping up' this auction. This is a great guitar and this will be an honest auction.

Paul...As you know I have a pretty large "stable" of these guitars (17 last count)The newest one I have is the Burg '77, but I have kept away from the "Bug" style headstock.

I think this auction features a magnificantly preserved example of the later "serial number" Custom Agents and should fetch more than the equivilent of $1200 US.....just my 2 cents ..and NO, I will not be bidding as I am on a strict guitar allocation after the bruise that the Cowboy and Deluxe 59er just put in my guitar fund !

Paul, no, I think I have a couple of "bugs" for instance the Burg is a "bug" and I know I have a black one with the "bug"...I am currently organizing my collection and building a new studio/shop so much of my collection is currently in offsite storage. I'll take picts of the "gang" that I have here, but I think I only have a dozen or so...Heres an old picture that shows the black "bug"..I have sold off at least 2 of the CA's pictured in this photo...

How well do these guitars actually PLAY? Do they compare to the later 70's early 80's Artists?

Soul...The CA is basically a LP clone with a mandolin style headstock. The construction is similar to the typical Clone of the Day , Sandwich mohagany body, maple ply cap, chambered body, killer super 70's. These guitars are lighweight, sound great & just ooozzee vintage vibe ! Sly, of Sly and the Family Stone, was an early endorser of these unusual guitars... What makes them so desireable is that they represent one of the first departures from the clone factory,Set Neck, cool decorative elements (ie "inlays", Headstock, Position markers).

The artists (especially 1976-1979) are a whole different animal and cannot be compared. The Artist represents (imho) the pinnicle of the Golden age of Japanese Lutherie. These beasts had features that the American counterparts could only dream of. (Patented Bridge system, Sustain block, Velve tune tuners, custom fret shape, MOP/Abalone markers, intergrated EQ systems, 5, 7 & 9 layer bindings, Book matched flame maple tops, Super 70, 80 & 88 PUPS, Sure Grip Knobs, etc). The quality that was put into the Artist series allowed the average Joe to own a virtually hand built guitar that rivaled the American counterpart-at an affordable price. I don't think that you can compare a CA to an Artist...its like comparing a LP custom to a telecaster-they are both good-but different.

Michael, I thought that one came and went... I went back to find the completed auction but it disappeared (or I didn't scrub hard enough).

Anyway, she's competing against 2 super model CA's. Too bad about the headstock.

I dunno Dave...the "Sly" affiliation might not work in your favor

And when I think of smokin' guitar players, I think of Sly almost immediately.

Sorry Dave, found a little bordom this AM

Dave G. I was asking the question of how they compare in quality of play, not in how they compare structuraly or sound wise. I have an artist so I am aware of the incredible workmanship that the Artist has, and what it offers to the player. I was just wondering if the CA matches that workmanship.

Great story about Sly that shows my age. I'm out of the Army maybe 2 or 3 months - back home in Chicago, it's late July, maybe early August 1970. I'm working for a subsidiary of IBM, our offices are on East Erie street, a couple blocks east of Michigan Ave., working the 4 to midnight shift. North of the heart of downtown Chicago by 10 or so blocks.

So the City is hosting a free concert in Grant Park: some good local bands, the Jefferson Airplane and closing the show is Sly and the Family Stone... It's a typical hot Chicago day, because of the different bands playing the audience is quite mixed racially. It's really going well and the bands are kicking ... About 7:00 pm it's Sly's turn and they are nowhere to be seen - the crowd waits and waits, after a while they start getting restless. Gotta remember it's 1970 and there's still a lot of tension and bad memories in Chicago (many never forgot the way the public was treated at the Democratic Convention, literally just down the street). About an hour goes by and finally the MC of the show announnces that Sly will not be performing and everyone should go home...

Well the crowd got very angry, I could say p***ed off would be an understatement, and went on a rampage of Michigan Ave., Wabash Ave. one street over, and State Street areas. Breaking store windows and looting, turning over automobiles and setting fire to many. By the time it was over that part of downtown was sealed off and Hiz Honnor brought in the riot squads and locked down the whole Loop Area.

From the 4th floor office we had we could see a lot of the fires and smoke. By 12:30 a.m. when I got off I very carefully worked my way through that area (what I could get to) to make it home. It was very strange to see such a pretty part of downtown so trashed out...

So as much as I liked Sly's music I have never forgotten that day when he was a no-show and the riots that came with it.

Bobzilla,
You must be kidding Bro. This was one full scale riot with a huge area of the Loop trashed - not a shopwindow spared or store missed out on the looting. Cars burned, innocent bystanders assualted.

I know New Yorkers are full of themselves and think there's no better or bigger city. Clearly this was one evening's destruction that I'd lay at Sly Stone's door... ("There's a riot going on, student demonstration time"),

Soul/Dave

Now now... I think Soul's question is only answerable by the individual who's asking. You really need to try something before you can make a judgement. All guitars are different and everyone has their own view on what is a nice feel and what ain't so great.

The only leveller I can think of is that most Ibanez guitars in this "original design" 70's period have roughly the same neck and fingerboard profile. They have roughly the 14 degree headstock rake like most of the Gibsons being produced during the same period.

The necks feel pretty friendly and after years of personally playing all types of guitars (makes and shapes) the Ibanez profile from this period neither feels fat or chunky... just friendly. Y'know, just like an old Gibson feels. In fact, I can narrow it down a bit and say more 1963/64 Gibson 335 or SG.

I don't think I could personally describe it any other way.

Hope this helps?

I said fat or chunky but I left out thin and they certainly aint thin.

I recall my Ibanez 2457 (355 copy) was kinda thin but that's the only one I can think of.
