I'm new here and own one Ibanez guitar - a vintage AM 205. Hoping to add my second this Wednesday - and Artist.

Would anyone like to post what they consider to be their Top 10 Ibanez Guitars they'd like to find. Or maybe just that one Holy Grail guitar?

I've enjoyed learning from you all!

best,
falcon

Are you buying a second AM-205? If so, where are you finding them?

I have an AM-255. I found mine in a pawn shop. It's mint, but not completely original. The pickups had been replaced with EMG-81s; the tremolo bar and case were also missing.

Which brings another question to mind. Does anyone have an AM-205 or AM-255 with its original case? If so, how much does the case add to the value of the guitar?

From what I've learned on this forum, the original tremolo bars are ultra rare.

Arney, thanks for responding. No I'm buying an Artist on Wednesday after seeing it in person.

But as I run into other possibilities, I'm wondering what others consider their favorite Ibanez guitars. The ones they wish they could find. The ones they love to play the most. The short list of what they like the best.

Speaking of best, best to all,

Falcon...Having collected Ibanez for the last 10 years or so, I can tell you that the solid ash guitars are my favorites...2617 & all the professional series (except the Weir-its just too unbalanced for me). In addition any of the Artist series pre 1980 are great ! (The later 80's Artists are a bit thick for my tastes). I guess my list would also include the LP clones of the '74-'77, (the L6s Clone is notable too !) and the neck thru musicians.....Well, put it this way...I never met an Ibanez that I didn't like !

I haven't been collecting as long as the other folks here (not to make any excuses) but...

I actually have my sights set on just a few Ibanez guitars.

Ibanez Custom Agent (I'm not picky, just be original and in good shape).
Ibanez JemVWH (That Steve Vai, such a nice little boy)

There's a ton of other Ibanez guitars I wouldn't kick out of my collection (like my MC400), but those two are next on my list.

My goal as a new collector isn't to amass guitars I'll never play, but to collect the guitars I'd play regularly. If I had the resources, I'm sure I would have sniped many-o-Ibanez guitars from eBay....

This thread prompted me to dust off one of the classics that I have the pleasure of owning- a 1974 Custom Agent (all original logo pups and all) . I took it to my Monday nite "Over the Hill Gang" blues session...I am still blow away by the sound of these vintage beasts ! The other players were "strat" heads and kept trying to match the wall o vintage sound with an increase of the volume on the amp-The one '72 LP sounded pretty good , but the CA on Rhythm really belts out a soulful tone to the strains of BB's "The Thrill is Gone" and on Treble-the leads to "Born under a Bad Sign" were just awesome !
I am priviledged to own a bunch of these and I have just re-learned why !

Sven:

I like your list. Except for the 2 AMs, you could paste your list right onto the end of mine. I'd replace them with Lee Ritenour's prototype blonde AS400 in one slot:
http://www.ibanezcollectors.com/cgi-bin/discus/show.cgi?tpc=16&post=8941#POST894 1
and Bruce Forman's custom jazz box in the other: http://www.ibanezcollectors.com/cgi-bin/discus/show.cgi?tpc=17&post=5553#POST555 3

The first time I saw the SC3120 was on the Ibanez Register. Here's some really good pictures: http://www.ibanezregister.com/Gallery/J-Custom/gal-jcust-sc3120nt.htm

I have a feeling they were only available in Europe. Good job tracking that one down. I wish I could afford it. I guess that means that you HAVE to buy it.

John, any idea of what the SC3020 is? It is listed right above the 3120, but there are no photos.

Dave G, It's good to hear you're playing some of those guitars :-)

No idea on what the SC3020 is. Did you look at the S9870 CRS above the SCs? You gotta love those J-Customs. But it seems that they've steered away from S models and make mostly RGs.

John, are you still playing your J Custom?

I did see the S9870. It's a beauty. I don't think there is too much demand for S series J Customs. But the RGs get snapped right up - a few minutes spent at the jemsite.com forum will confirm that.

Oh yeah! I love the size, weight, materials, versatile sounds and fantastic craftmanship.

But I wonder what it would be like with a Wilkinson-like trem or fixed bridge and a more Artist-like neck radius. Not that I'd give this one up. Just love to expand on a good thing.

The 2001 JCS1-CRS looks a whole lot like the 2002 S9870 CRS. If anybody wants to get rid of these S style J-Customs, in favor of the RG style, send them my way!

The trem is the only thing that would hold me back from an S prestige. Guitars with locking trems never sound good to me. Wouldn't a J Custom SV be nice?

I'd give some of my body parts for this guitar. Did you see the guitar? did you play it? let me know. I remember the posts, I am still feaking out about this guitar. I wonder if he'd let go of it. If you happen to bump into him in your travels, and you don't mind asking him, I'd buy it. I just e-mailed him and asked if he'd sell it, maybe he'll respond. And once again, thanx guys.

I got to hold it and play a few notes on it unplugged but not long enought to enjoy it. We were all pretty excited about the whole show.

The guy with the guitar e-mailed me back. He wants to sell it. Evidently, a bunch of folks contacted him and made offers, as I did. He says he doesn't know what it's worth and he's going to determine what it's worth before he lets it go. So... there goes another one I'll never own. I wish I had the bucks to fight it out with the big boys. Whoever gets it... good luck with it.

How would you go about finding out the value if it's one of a kind...

Seems like the only way would be to put it on a no reserve auction on eBay with a starting bid of 0.01.

Obviously, he will inquire with as many people as he can who he feels would provide valuable insight into the value of the guitar. Even if he only asks 3 or 4 people, I think he would get a general idea. In any event, thje guitar will only be worth what someone is willing to pay for it anyways. He may come to the conclusion that it's worth $10,000 (a silly #.... just for the sake of this conversation) but... if folks are only willing to fork over $1000... then it doesn't matter what he thinks it's worth. To put it for auction, with no reserve seems the best way but I am sure the no reserve aspect of that scenario would be a bit troubling for the seller. And... from what he told me, about the amount of inquiries he's received, I don't think you will see it on Ebay. My guess is, he'll take the best offer and avoid the ebay fees. Whatever it is, I am just real interested to know what his decision is as far as the value. I'd like a legitimate shot at the guitar. Man I hope that my posting that photo didn't lead to me losing out by creating more competition for it than would have existed without the post. I chose it as my #1 choice in this "top ten" thread.

Bobzilla:

Usually, I say USUALLY, I don't like neck thru's where the "neck thru" wood shows on the top, but after seeing that guitar I'd have to say I've changed my mind. WOW !#$%^&*(

But I came here to answer the question the thread was asking: it may not be "collectable" in a lot of people's eyes. but I think the older Ibanez George Benson, GB10N's, are one of Ibanez's best gutiars. I've surely owned my share of Ibanez's saying this... Overall I am never let down looking at, playing, or listening to what you can do with a good GB-10...

The gentleman who owns my #1 pick Ibanez got back to me with what he thinks he wants (minimally) for his guitar. Out of respect, I won't divulge the exact # because I think if anyone wants to do that, it should be the owner. That said... it's out of my range (just by a a wee bit) and in the neighborhood of what you'd expect to pay for an Artwood Twin these days. I could actually buy it but... either my mc500nt or my ar1200av would most likely have to go and I guess those 2 guitars are easier to come by than his guitar so maybe.... you guys will have a shot at my mc500nt and ar1200av soon. And... I can take that $$$ and put it towards #1.
