2617 pickups

I have a 2617 with dimarzio paf classics. I'm pretty happy with the sound, but have been offered NOS Super 70s pickups for £80 each (about $135) or NOS Super 80s Flying Fingers for £90 each. If older, the correct pups would be super 70s. I purchased my first vintage Ibanez st-50 about a month ago. I fell in love with it as soon as I replaced the missing tuning peg and tunedit up. It felt great, and I played it like I have been playing it for ten years.. It was perfect.. I know this is nowhere near the calibre of guitars you hunt for but I am very pleased. (Different subject) I was on Ebay and I was just about to bid on this guitar when I noticed the bridge didn't go with the rest of the guitar.. And so beautiful it makes me weep. And, yes, I am infected!   Skybone Username: Skybone Registered: 03-2001 Posted on Sunday, September 18, 2005 - 2:31 pm:    Hi Danny, I believe the pickups in a '77 would be Super80's. I had a Jan 77 2619 once with a Super80 and a DiMarzio in. Advice? Check the output of the pickups and make sure they're a matched pair, i.e. around 7-8k ohm for the neck pickup, and around 12-13k ohm for the bridge. If you're happy with the sound from your DiMarzio's, then keep them on, but if you get either the 70's or 80's, then you can put them in if you ever sell your Artist to make it that little more "authentic". IMO anyhoo. My 2619 from '79 (tri-sounds & block inlays) has the stock Super80's in, and it does sound great (again IMO), with a really well balanced tone. What about the price? I have handwound Bareknuckle pickups on a couple of other guitars (which I can highly recommend to anyone, if you are looking for replacements!) which cost about the same. If I do decide to go for the Ibanez originals, should I go with the price quoted or should I hang on and keep an eye on eBay? Once again, your advice would be invaluable! Cheers   Skybone Username: Skybone Registered: 03-2001 Posted on Tuesday, September 20, 2005 - 9:33 am:    Personally, I don't think that the prices quoted are that reasonable, and if you wanted to spend that kind of money on replacement pickups, you may as well spend it on some more Bare Knuckles (I have 2 sets on different guitars, and they are fantastic, well worth it!). I have a set in a 78 IC200, and it sounds excellent! If you wanted to return your Artist to "stock" specs, for collectability value, then go for it. If the prices quoted were for the matched pair, then I'd say get them, £80 & £90 EACH is a bit of a ripoff IMO. The choice is yours at the end of the day though.
