What would your opinions be about the value of this guitar. It's the only one.
1I would like as many opinions as possible (before I sell my 2 favorite guitars to buy this one.) Thanx folks.

Bob,

If I may be so bold to ask....

What is it about this guitar that makes you lust after it so much? You have two BEAUTIFUL guitars up for (potential) sale to fund the purchase of this one of a kind guitar.

While it is a beautiful and rare bird, I'm just curious if owning this guitar is going to be everything that you are looking for. After all, it's only made of wire and wood and someday, it will be dust (ok, and some plastic parts).

I know there are some Ibanez collectors that seem to have an endless supply of cash (and room to store the guitars). I am not one of them... so I'll leave the appraisal to those folks.

It seems that you could get yourself an ST production model and keep your other two guitars in your stable. And heck, with the money you saved after switching to Geico, you could pick up a couple more vintage Ibanez guitars and a PRS.

-Brent

Very pretty guitar. I would have to know how it plays before I took the plunge. Looks heavy and I've never been a fan of active electronics in guitars. I'd say 1500 tops but that's just me. I'm poor. I'm sure it's worth twice that. But that's a lot of coin to throw out for a dolled up Studio. It's sound like you want it bad and if that's the case grab that pretty thing.

Hey 'Zilla - Are you sure that this is a neck-thru design? I noticed that what looks to be a center cut is much wider than what I nornally see for neck-thru. Maybe part of a cap. Then I saw Freak raise that question on the other thread and though you might have missed it.

Not sure if that is important and I'm sure set-neck at min. - just fyi

Bob,
You made the prudent choice here Bro, it is a nice axe - I think the thing that struck me the most about it is the (Brazilian) dark wood contrasting with the blonde, an especially tasty guitar. And that is coming from a guy that doens't like that style of instrument... I like tops all one type of wood...
But again, you did the smart thing... MAYBE later the guy will come DOWN in price and you can get it (and keep the other guitars). Fingers crossed on that one.

I saw one like this except it didn't have the EQ about a year ago for sale on ebay canada. I went for just under $400 USD.
I definatly knew I was going to regret letting that one slip by.

The owner said that Jim Donahue said there were 12 of these models made in 1980.

If there are 12......... where did the "one-of-a-kind" denotation come from? And... if there's 12, I feel much better about not dropping $4k on the axe. I am also happy I did not part with the ar1200av because... I loved it when I got it and... I like it even more now. The ar1200av is really a sweet axe (if you can get your hands on one, buy it, you won't regret it.)

It looks like a flash Studio to me. They don't fetch much and globally are probably the least desirable pre 80's Ibanez model out there.

But, it is a smart looking version so I'll start the bidding at $750.00

Bob - some of the folks here might have more input on the reasons for the misconception that only one of these guitars was made.

We could throw around dollar figures all day.. 750 is one figure. I think it'd be a fair price. But I'm always looking for the killer deals.

I say put that sucker on eBay and see how much she flies for! Although the owner of the 1980 model isn't selling, but it sounds like the 1979 is??

The reason for the one of a kind misconception was when UsaCustom contacted Hoshino USA about the guitar and they faxed him the order form for it. They said that only one of these came through the Bensalem facilty and it was a custom order. I don't think they told him it was the only one in the world.

Freak, thanx for that insight. I wonder if "O" has this thing already. I wonder if the owner still wants what he wants for it, if he no longer believes it's a one-of. And... A big reason I was hoping for solid dollar amount estimated is because... I would have taken that input and run it by the owner in an attempt to bring his asking price down. If I could have said to him "Look, here's a printout from the ICW site that indicates the most knowledgible Ibanez people believe your guitar is worth $750 and you are asking $4k for it, maybe we can work something out." That's why I was hoping for solid dollar amounts from you guys. The other info/insight you have provided is also greatly appreciated though.

If it matters to anyone...higher end models of the Studio line have a much different tone than the lower end models. Both play extremely well but the lower end ST50 and ST55 have a mahogony body which give the guitar much more of a warm Gibson SG type tone. The higher end models have the maple cores (with ash wings...like my ST300) giving the guitar a much brighter tone. FYI for the tone freaks out there.

As far a ebay pricing goes on the Studio line, I really like these guitars and have been looking for a mint example for over 5 years...quite simply put there aren't very many mint examples out there. People bought these guitars new in the late 70s for a little over $250.00 with the harshell case. Pretty affordable set neck high quality guitar. As a result they were played and abused so most ebay examples are pretty beat up. Not real representative of what the market is really willing to pay for a near mint to mint example of these guitars.

Hey Ronald,

Welcome to ICW (Ibanez Collector's World). Real nice guitar you have there. You see a good case of human nature in action here - people doubting and also trying to save themselves some money. So watch the discussions but don't take any of it personally. Also keep in mind how you might feel/react if you were the potential buyer and you saw a guitar you JUST HAD TO HAVE !!! LOL...

Anyway welcome to our board. Some great guitars and people pass thru these doors. (I too have no personal interest in the instrument, tho it is really cool looking).

I sent the owner of the guitar I posted above an e-mail with a link to this thread, hoping he would read it and maybe come down to a realistic price for his guitar. He seems like a nice fellow, but... his reply was kinda "overboard." He thinks WE (ICW Guys) don't know what we're talkin' about in regards to his guitar and... he's stickin' to the "one-of-a-kind" belief and he's not budging on the $4000. The difference between the $4000 he wants and the $750 mentioned above is quite dramatic. The more I think about it, the more I realize that $4000 is actually ridiculous. Think about the guitars you could have for $4000. First of all, how could his guitar be worth more than the new BWM? You could get 2 decent Les Paul's for that money too. (sorry 'bout that.) An Artwood Twin. etc. etc. etc. Why does he think he's got the only one when there seems to be at least 12 of them? I dunno. But, it's his guitar and I guess he's not in need of money so he doesn't even have to test the waters to see what the true value is. In any event...... I am glad I did not sell my guitars to get his. Nice axe though. I'd like to own it... or one of the others. P.S. - If anyone's in New York, I'm on radio station WBAB 102.3 FM Oct. 3,4, and 5. 11:50 pm. They are playing a few of my songs, if you care to listen.

IMHO- I believe that E-bay – good as it may be – has created a greed culture where everything is ‘rare’. An another forum I’ve heard of guys spending $2000 for a 50’s LP scratchplate ( a modified one at that) and $10,000 for pick up rings. Again IMHO I think its all gone banana’s – too much money and too little sense. I’ve got Ibanez parts on my Gibbo coz they’re better than Gibson’s parts (which I also have). How can you justify a $2000 scratchplate – would by me a Strat and an Ibanez. $4000 for a used Studio - CRAZY!!!

It's not ebay, it's the bidders that are acting ridiculously. Some people just seem to have too much money to waste.

Artist, Musician or whatever, the "Cowboy" has pretty much set the cap on all Ibanez. Best price has been around 4,500.

I think Gary may own his LE a bit longer.
