That has to be one of the nicest 2630's I've ever seen! Very nice bookmatched flame on the top AND back! Maybe the price was right for that one.

Haven't we seen nice 2630's go for more? I remember less than a year ago when a NOS 2630 (or early AS-200) went for $3K.

Relatively speaking, if AM-2xx's go for over 1K, shouldn't nice 2630's do likewise. Or, do you feel that AM-2xx's are worth more? Granted, you may not want to spend that much, however, others certainly are.

Speaking of AM-2xx's, how do people feel about the AM-200 Artstar? I asked in another topic, however, no one responded.

I can't believe that thay guitar went for $1,250 ! Believe me the 2630's are awesome guitars & this one has a great Flame top, but did you notice the amount of corrosion on the PUPS ? The buyer must immediately remove the pickguard and will, most likely , have to replace the harness, give 'er a fret dress and find a new case or the corrosion will continue. With this in mind, the PUPs will still be green ! IMHO this guitar should have sold in the $750-$800 range, taking into consiteration the extent of the corrosion, even with the awesome top. I bet the buyer has no idea of the extent of the deterioration that the Pickguard can do to these vintage guitars-it gets into the case and all. Then again I have a closet full of guitars that "I just had to have" and $ was not the primary consideration..

Dave, I understand your point about the corrosion and gassing issues. However, after doing exactly what you mentioned to my old gassed/corroded 2630 and replacing the pups with Super 58's, it looks, plays and sounds like a million bucks! Not nearly as flamey as the one that sold, but I would not sell it now for under $1,500! And it isn't likely to ever be for sale. Those are incredible, but underrated guitars in my opinion.

I still think the selling price of $1,250 is a deal. Aren't vintage guitar prices set by actual buyers anyway?

I sold a 2630 in similar condition for $1,100 but it was two years ago when AS200's were going for under $1,000. I think $1,250 is a fair price for this 2630 nowadays.

Tim...FYI, IMHO=In My Humble Opinion-that is ..I was just offering my opinion that the buyer might be in for a bit of a suprise if he has to put a new harness, PUPS, Pickguard, Case and fret dress on a $1,200 purchase. The seller does not mention the corrosion, even thou it is clearly visable. In addition, my disbelief was based on the fact that, last month, I offered a '76 2630 which ALREADY had NOS super 80's, Bridge, reguilded stop, BRAND NEW MArtin case & new custom pickguard and couldn't get any interest beyond $650 ! The top is nice, but not quite as nice as this one. I guess I'm just jelous that I could not get $1,200 for the one I had for sale....I guess timing is everything in this world and there is nothing I'd rather see than the prices of vintage Ibanez going up....I own a couple....

No biggie, Dave. That's EBay for ya. And as far as the wiring disclosure issue...Caveat Emptor (Buyer Beware).

And look on the bright side, your 2630 just appreciated 48% in a single month!!

I have an 2630 which I purchased from EU Wurlitzer Music in Boston in Feb 1979, when I was a music student at Berklee College of Music. This 2630 that just sold looks exactly like mine except for my pickups are still shiny and my Machine gears are translucent cream. I still have the original case and warrenty card with QA signatures. Another post by John shows this guitar from the 1978 catalog. My serial number indicates Oct 78. I have found this post and others very useful in finding the original specs of my 2630 and its value. Thanks to everyone for the excellent info.

I do have one observation which I am interested if others have encountered. For insurance purposes I have had my 2630 appraised twice over the past 18 years and always find it is appraised for much more than its street value. In Canadian dollars the 2630 that just sold is $1467. 18 years ago my 2630 was appraised at $2000. Last year another store appraised it at $3000. I suspect the reason is simply that to replace it brand new requires purchasing the JSM100 John Scofield model which currently retails in Canada for $3900 and sells in the stores for about $2600.

Mpawson~

Typical Homeowner insurance policies (in the U.S.)use the terms "actual cash value" (ACV) or "replacement cost" when it comes to Contents/Personal Property. In the event of a loss/claim, the property is adjusted based on which langauge is in your policy. If it is ACV, then it is paid based on "replacement cost LESS depreciation". In the case of your 2630, it would mean the cost of a new JSM100/Scofield, with a deduction for age (depreciation) since 2630's are no longer in production and the Sco is the most comparable model. Usually that is a judgment call in the case of musical instruments, and quite subjective. If you have a higher priced "replacement cost" policy endorsement, then you get the full replacement cost of a 'like, kind & quality' instrument...a new JSM100 with zero depreciation.

Appraisal values are all over the place, depending on who you get it from. Most reputable dealers will use guidebooks as a baseline, then take into account the specific condition of your guitar to adjust the value upwards or downwards. Ebay values may or may not be considered. It depends on how rare a given instrument is or how 'hot' it is on the market. The best source is an actual documented appraisal from a qualified dealer however. They usually charge for the service and provide written documentation of their evaluation and market conditions at the time.

Hope this helps.

Tim

GuitarTim:

Thanks for the lesson on the insurance. I'll have to look into mine and make sure what kind of coverage I really have.
