My AM-50 is very light, especially compared with the solidbody Artists. How does the weight of the 200-series guitars compare vs. the AM-50 and other Artists?

Thanks,
mk

Weigh of the AM's that I own or owned: AM255-7.78lb; AM205-7.43lb; AM300-6.36lb; and AM50-6.84lb. Maple appears to be lighter that mahogany I guess.

I just received an 1980 AR-100 that I bought for a friend and it's seems much lighter than my 1982 AR-500. Does anyone know how much an '80 AR-100 weighs. Does an AR-105 weigh more?

tnx,
mk

Ace!

Can you post a pic of your '86 AR300 SpecialEd - I've never seen one before.

Thanx,
EJ

Ace, I might have held onto that one, and... dealt with the weight. Look at the top on it. NICE! One of the nicer ones I've seen, I think. If I can make it thru a set with the ar1200av, I could make it thru the evening with your am-50. This may seem silly, because it doesn't address the weight issue, but I've found that the guitar strap you use on heavier beasts is critical to being able to deal with weight issues. You can at least have a strap that's "comfortable" and that helps alot. With the ar1200 I tried several different straps til I found one that wouldn't cut into me from the weight of the guitar and that made a big big difference. Then, it was a matter of becoming aclimatized to the weight, you get used to it after a little while. I guess I'm used to it by now because of the doublenecks I've owned and played.

Thanks Ace! She's a beautiful beast.

Say, do you have any info on the difference (if any)in sound/tone between a '82 AR300CS and the '86 you've posted here? Have you played both at length enough to formulate an opinion?

Certainly one major difference is the Gibralter II but I don't know just how much that affected the tone.

When did Ibanez move to the thicker Artist? I'm guessing 1981/1982?

1980 I believe. FYI it was also shortened by ~1.3 inches. So, the weight of my '81 AR 300CS ("Fatty") is roughly the same as my '79 AR500 (2622 body)- just different balance. The 2622 bodies are a bit more 'neck heavy' for lack of a better term.

Your ex-girlfriend AR500 should also be about the same weight as the AR300 that I've mentioned here in that, yes, it has more hardware, but it also has less mahogany with all the extra cavity space for eq system and battery.

I don't think any of the standard early 80's ARs were much over 9.75 lbs. Special/Ltd. Eds might be though.

PS -- Where is everyone...in bed with the Bird Flu? ICW has been a ghost town lately...must be out (or in) playin'

I'm not sure about 1980 as the April 1980 AR100 I just bought is MUCH lighter than the AR500 I recently sold. Maybe it varies by model? Overall, is the AR100 significantly lighter than other models?

btw....it's ok to talk about my ex-girlfriend's weight. Just leave my current girlfriend's weight out of this discussion.

Yeah, well the 1 lb less abalone/mop might be a good place to start.

They may have chambered some of the Artists back then, I dunno.

But your last question was regarding thickness, not weight. When they (sadly) dumped the smooth heel, they got fatter and shorter...and 1980 was the year.

Why do you guys keep saying the "smooth heel" disappeared in 1980? My '82 and '86 Artists were about as smooth as smooth gets.

1980 WAS the beginning of the thicker body and deeper set neck joint. A far better design than the earlier version IMHO.

Mr. Star: I've owned my 3 Artists for about 11 months - FAR from being an expert on the evolution of the 4 number and AR body type migration from late '70s to mid '80s. All I know is that for the short time I've been studying the detail of these guitars, I've never seen this neck (Smooth Heel I?)later than early 1980.
Smooth Heel I

Also, here is another thread discussing this very topic.

1982 AR100 = 4,9 kg
