Finally! This is the elusive 1979 AR400. Here's a link to a catalog picture of the AR family: http://www.ibanezcollectors.com/cgi-bin/discus/show.cgi?tpc=12&post=16487#POST16 487 It looks to be in fantastic shape, too. It looks like it's only available to German ebayers. |

It will be shipped throughout Europe. It has some beltbucklerash on the back and one exchanged tuner. Otherwise the seller claims it to be in OK condition. Paul |

Very interesting, and the 'AR400' name is dead on. It really is a step between the AR300 and AR500. How many were made? mk |

Looks like I missed this thread, btw. those ICW-friendly ebay-links do not show with my browser.. That elusive specimen of beautiful AR-family however could not resist my sniper-methods, so pictures will be available, as soon as it gets "home".. |

Fox: Sorry that the ICW-friendly links don't work for you, but I'm really glad that you got the AR400. It's the first I've ever seen, outside of the catalog. How long do you think before it gets to you? |

John, depends completely of the seller.. from Germany to Finland post usually comes 4-7 days, depending of the time of day the parcel is posted. I d take a guess about a week-and -a half.. Indeed, we have discussed earlier about AR 400, and I have never seen one IRL..not a single specimen, though I did a lot of guitar repairs/ conditioning/ hot-rodding in the 80s.. Educated guess is, the production numbers were exceptionally low.. Well, pictures will follow.. Maybe some sort of comparison between AR500... The lack of on-off switch suggests that the wiring is different from normal 500-3000-5000 EQ board.. But let us see.. |

Fox, do you have a '79 AR500 with Super 80s OOP as one of the trisound modes? |

So super 58s, stock-ier body and Parallel-Single-Series(HB) for the trisounds? |

Jes, that is the case.. BTW. tri-sounds as stock on a production guitar was one of the reasons why I suddenly got this Ibanez Artist- fever.. Other reason was, I was in need to get 12-string guitar in the early 80s for one project, and one guy in a music shop said to me "Try this one, it is a used one , unfortunately it is heavy as ton of lead.." It was a 2618-12 that I still have... |

Fox, have you ever played a '79 AR500? And, if so, which one do you like best between the '79 and your '80 as they are vastly different? Thanks for your help as I am eyeballing one like yours. |

Closest thing to that (exept thinner body) must have been -78 "Steve Miller model" 2622EQ Artist.. If you have in mind the possible "overlap" in pickups, some -79s have been equipped with Super80s.. Super80s have that "ceramic edge" because of the magnets, so they are quite a bit hotter and, some say, harsher sounding than Super58s. Otherwise those two guitars are in my opinion quite a bit different, the AR500 has tri-sounds and adjustable gain/preamp boost..so it is more versatile, sound-wise.. I am sorry, but year -79 AR500 is not so familiar to me, that I could say anything based on real experience.. I have played and repaired/fixed quite a few guitars, but hey, these "bigger number" Artists are really not so common..(exept here, but that is quite another story) |

I have a '79 AR500 and a 2622EQ and you are correct - they are very similar when the trisounds are set to series and the tone knob is wicked at 10. Then they are virtually indistinguishable. I also have a '81 AR300 which is pretty much the same setup as your AR500 sans the EQ. I highly recommend the '79 AR 500 for rarity and clarity...and fyi...it is never harsh. I look forward to a full report on your new AR400 as it will have many similarities as the first two axes I've mentioned. I just hope you like your '80 AR500 as I'm looking at one to pick up - possibly tonight! Thanks Fox! |

Michael! Did you not just dump your AR500 (very) similar to the one we were bidding on tonight (I'm AceMark911 on eBay)..."too heavy"...your aching back and such...and now we see you sniffing around for another...you...you...you dealer Scorch - I saw you come in and I backed off my final bid...I know how much you want one of these. I was sorry to see it sniped at the last moment. I have a feeling you will end up with one from one of our peers out here...that way you know for sure what your getting and have some good follow-up support. So it remains still, just around the corner. |

Yes...at that price, I couldn't resist. Based on my bid, I knew I wouldn't win. Besides, if I was serious, I would have sniped... btw...I am curious to see if a late '70's, early 80's AR500 is significantly lighter than the '82 I sold. The '80 AR100 certainly is. mk |

Thanks for the consideration Michael. I couldn't get to a computer at auction end. I would've obviously gone higher. Oh well! I contacted someone from one of the Japaneese AR links that was posted a few days ago. He said He would keep a lookout as well. One of these days!!!! Thanks, John |

MK, I don't think there was a third (or chambered) AR body type. And yes, other than the stain, I'm sure that one was the same as yours as they went to that body type at the same time they went to the Super 58s. I really think the reason your AR100 is slightly lighter than your old 500 is the lack of big inlays and less electronics (could be a thinner cap too). One other way to tell if it is the '79 2622 body type (thinner, longer and different balance) is that there were no fingered tiger maple tops used on the 2622 bodies. So, when you see stripes, I believe it indicates post-change. And BTW MK, if you really are looking for that 'Weir clank/chime glass-like" chord tones of the Cowboy, the '79 AR is your girl and no need for the third pup. The combination of the Super 80s and an Out-of-Phase trisound mode (also abandoned with the change) mixed with the other pup in Series(HB) mode gives you that particular sound. Incredible when used with a Morley chorus/flanger (or any other decent chorus) pedal! I wish you were up the street so you could check it out for yourself – perhaps I can lay some samples down and send them off to you. The only caveat about out-of-phase mode is that it is pretty much useless by itself (supposed to be that way - the better the OOP, the less you will hear)...but oh so amazing for harmonic coloration when mixed with the other PUP. Parallel is what you had for the 58's along with the single and series modes. And I like the parallel in my '81 AR 300 but it is not that sound you seem to seek. Best, EJ |

This is a very common scam. I've received a few of these. For those who listen to Howard Stern, Bababooee (sp?) was ripped off for $2,000 by responding to one of these Second Chance Offers and wiring the money to someone in England. Bad move... 1) Contact the seller 2) Alert eBay beware... mk |

Tubescorcher: Did you receive the second chance offer thru regular email or thru ebay's email system? If you got it thru ebay's system, that means that the user's account that it came thru has been hacked. That user and the real seller are probably NOT the same. I got one several weeks ago after loosing an auction. In my case I knew the seller and there was no way this second chance offer was legit. The "respond to an AOL email address only" is also a dead giveaway. I contacted the user (thru the ebay messaging system) and he said that he's had no activity on his account for 2 years and that all this must be ebay's problem. I reported it to ebay thru their standard reporting page and then complained in their follow-up survey that it was an inadequate method to report a crime. That got somebody's attention. They explained that the user's account had been hi-jacked, yadda, yadda. And that they had the matter under control and were working with various law enforcement agencies to take care of things. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. |

Correct on the tri-sound settings. From what I can tell, Dave G and I are the only ones that own this model(and I'm not sure about Dave as there was never an end to the Vietnamese inlay story). I will when I'm able - still rehabing the wrist so not playing much yet. |

Dave, I surely didn't mean to scratch the wound and I still don't hear any sign of a happy ending so that sucks and I digress. I can only hope it's on the horizon somewhere. As an aside, the luthier I use here has had mine for 4 mos for a neck re-binding/color match and plane/refret - it's always some illness excuse...I think he's a bit of a hypochondriac! Anyway, I feel for ya - mine's only up the street and he has me wondering... |

Dave, maybe tell the guy you're gonna happen to be in his neck of the woods on business in a few weeks and see how he reacts. You can always say the trip was cancelled in the long run but maybe it will help you feel him out. Tell him you wanna stop in and pick it up. Ay? |

Strings, isn't it remarkable (and amusing) that the word slipped through the censorship filter, while I still didn't manage to get the first name of my jazz buddy visible on ICW? So silicon and plastics are allowed, but if your name sounds like the real thing, you're banned. And that's a pity, 'cause he's really good. We share a passion for good hollow and semi-hollow bodies, but he sold all of his Japanese jazz boxes to raise funds for a few good Gibbies. Maybe he had to upgrade, because he's playing on a very high level, but I still think, that he should have kept one Yamaha. Yamaha? Yes, he had a Yamaha that was better than an L-5CES. I heard that with my own ears. Even the owner of that Gibby admitted it. Anyway, this first name does NOT get through the ICW censorship filter, enjoy: http://www.index-it.nl/onstenk/ Ginger |

Dspellman, that's true, yes.. The difference is, that Richivak's guitar seems to have a Schaller, while there is a Grover in mine.. Have not found a replacement yet.. Might be a generic weak-spot in AR 400's... |

Hi, Im the seller of the AR400 in Toronto. Indeed one of the tuners is replaced, but I have the original tuner. The plastic bit was broken by previous owner and the tuner was replaced instead of replacing the plastic. The tuner mechanics work fine and like I said are with the guitar. It is for sale on craiglsit Toronto under: http://toronto.craigslist.org/msg/461110492.html I would also be willing to trade for other guitars of similar value. |
