Figured I'd start a thread on the most beautiful model ever made by Ibanez (in my opinion) - The 2671 Randy Scruggs.
My favorite is the darkburst one (G788864). The sunburst (A787710) has a little bit less flame and the earlier blond one has no serial numbers and super 70's unlike the others. I bought them all over the years in Sweden, but I don't think they were sold here originally apart from the blond.
Please post your Scruggs pictures if you have any. /Steph

Yeah, the dark sunburst one looks the best of them.

The natural finish is an early model (exactly like my one. Soon not to be mine) so only 1 switch.

Is the body thicker on the later ones, Steph?

It's an extra split on the sunbusrt one which I don't think is 100%.
The blond is an early (odl script logo) version.
The thickness is the same on all three.

What tuners does your blondie have Six, mine's been replaced and I'd like to get the originals put back on. (star or pearl tuners?)

/Steph.

Bobzilla,

I agree that the darkburst is the best - here the Weir (std) and Artist (2617) in the same family.

All three are beautiful, but I like the sunburst model best. I would have preferred cream pickup rings too, like the Artist. I guess I'm going to have to find one myself now :-)

Hi to all the Scruggs admirers,
I'd like to add a pic of my Scruggs which is dated Sept 77.My biased opinion is that these guitars are one of the most aesthetically gratifying guitars (along with the 2681) that one can lay their eyes on and their playablity is awesome.I often open the case and stare at its beauty. They don't make them like this anymore.

Dave: It sure is your old Weir! I actually had a wine version on the hook for a while but lost it.
Still looking for a decent 2617 in sunburst.

Mel: Nice guitar indeed. Looks a bit lighter than mine. Seems like they changed the tailpiece from the 77 to the 78. Mines from July 1978 and had the Artist cloud version.

Black pup rings is the way to go! I am glad I got to see these guitars with the black pup rings because.... I really don't like the cream pup rings on any guitar and I've always wondered what they'd look like with black pup rings. Now, I get a chance to see it and (personal preference) the black is so much cooler than the cream. Well, the cream looks good on cherry bursts definitely, but the AV finishes and all the other dark finishes look better in black rings. I think that the cream is just used by default because they had millions of them to use. Aesthetically, the black is so much better on the dark finishes. (IMHO).

My pre serial # vine Scruggs came with a black toggle switch selector ring. I've seen a pic of one like this in a mid 70's German wall chart (the blue one). It's definately original to the guitar. Jeff's one looks exactly like mine. Even down to wood grain.

Jeff, do you know what colour the pickup bobbins are on yours? Mine are cream and zebra.

The twin belonged to me. There are a couple of threads here on ICW explaining all. I sold it in 97 and it was a struggle to get rid of it! Don't know where it is now.

Apparently there is a guy in California who has a brown one. I reckon he may be the guy selling the 3 vines on ebay at the moment. Can't be sure though but you know how small the world is.

The only brownburst Artwood Twin in CA that I know of is owned by Ron Thorn. I'm not sure if he still has it, though. I'll ask him when I see him at NAMM this year.

Hi John, Would be nice if he could offer up a couple of photographs of his twin neck for the site. Perhaps you could sound him out for us?

So I assume then that's not the same guy who's selling the three vines on ebay right now?

Bob - thank you very much for the compliment. She holds a very special place in my heart. Unfortunatley when I received her a number of the higher frets were horribly damaged - almost as if someone took a metal file to them.

Fortunatley I'm friends with an incredible luthier - Matt Artinger. He does fret and inlay work all the time, so he was happy to fix it up for me. To by disbelief it was almost as if a brand new neck was put on. Score!

Just for the record - there have been so many breathetaking instruments I've seen on this site (not to discredit their tone or playability either), that I would be hard pressed to point out my favorite. That's why I love Ibanez - and all you guys are top notch too.

Cheers!

Jdd:

Are you from PA? I remember seeing Matt at the very first Philly Guitar show I attended. Since then, I've been impressed with every guitar he's brought.

In July, he was showing off a restoration to a very old Gibson that had a cracked top. He turned the guitar into a work of art. He does top notch work with a real unique style.

if anyone can post a way to get in touch with Matt.... that would be nice. Never know when you may need an excellent luthier. Especially with some of the chop-jobs we see every now and then on these old Ibanez axes.

Well, I'm actually from over in NJ - but the ride over the border to Matt's place isn't much of a drive (especially since the Weyerbacher brewery two towns over has free tasting on Saturdays )

The best way to get in touch with Matt would be to matt@artingerguitar.com

I feel oddly compelled to say that he is truely one of the nicest, most kindhearted people I've ever met. He has this bursting enthusiastic character that's very welcoming. At any rate, I figured I would try to attach a few photos Matt send over to me when he finished up fixing my Scruggs:

Text description

He even went ahead and scalloped the nut for me, which we both felt was totally in character with the guitars aesthetics.

Text description

Not to beat the topic to death, but I'm actually in the process of building a custom guitar with Matt (should be done in a few weeks!). Here's a quick glimpse at it:

Text description

It's basically an all mahogony dual P-90 semi-hollow deal. Koa and rosewood compliments throughout the instrument.

I was told by Michael Wright that "no records exist before June 1978." Being that the Professionals with vines started in late '75/early '76, there's not way to get the actual numbers.

Regarding Randy Scruggs: I searched Google for any images of Randy and could not find one where he was playing this model. And only a couple playing electric at all. What kind of music does/did he play. I'm familier his dad's work on the banjo and other stringed instruments...but know nothing on Randy.

What were the name of his bands? Are his efforts always solo? Any examples of him playing this axe? Is a he an accomplished player like the Roy Clarks/Glen Campbells of the world?

Thanks!

strings,
randy scruggs played with the earl scruggs review in the early years, when jeff hasselberger met him. hoshino was courting earl scryggs in hopes of getting a banjo endorsee. jeff became friends with randy and helped him with his electric setup. randy is now a recording industry executive in nashville.
thanks
