I think that I'd remember an AR5000 with that much damage to the back. What a shame to see another one of these rare beauties with such flaws.

It will be interesting to see how much it's valued/devalued.

Have you seen his eBay identity?
That looks like it's his phone number!

Well, at least it's only been mistreated & abused!

At least nobody tried to "improve" it!

Looks, to me, like one that someone here might be tempted to rehabilitate!

Gotta figure this one's worth a professional refinish and then.... you got something. Gotta be worth the investment of the re-fin.

If I was still mad on vines then this guitar would suit me fine. The bashing doesn't bother me at all. Like Bob's Satan, it's a player.

Some ppl actually do play some of these rare beauties. How dumb! Why would anyone want to do that? Maybe Ibanez should have put a tag that says- UNDER PENALTY OF LAW-DO NOT PLAY UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES,or WARNING: SIGNS OF WEAR MAY OCCURE IF PLAYED.*These two ptotocols maybe found under the collectors manifesto

Fingers, I for one, did not miss the sarcasm. But its one thing to play a guitar and its another to take a friggin drill to the face of a hand crafted instrument to install some retarted splitter switch ! These guitars were built to be played and enjoyed not used and abused

I am glad that i have never posted pictures of my '81 AR500AV.

Never modded but it shows all the years of stage use. Missing large amounts of finish on the back and huge belt gouges in the back as well.

It is still my main guitar. one day i might get a new bridge for it (Lord knows it needs one) but it is still a brilliant guitar. best of all it is my guitar. Every scratch and gouge bring back the memories of so much playing and more to come.

i never had to mod this guitar as it plays and sounds just fine. the only guitar i modded, is still going as my back up guitar and rehearsals guitar. An old Emperador LP copy - weighs a ton. Modded with two coil splitter switches and new D'marzio humbucker in the neck position and twin hot rail humbucker in the bridge position. This was modded way back when coil splitters were often referred to as polyphonic switches. Not a perfect mod job but one that gave that guitar a greater variety of sounds and suited my playing much better.

Players and collectors each have different wants, needs and perspectives. Both parties have just got to realise this and accept it. Guitars are works of art and tools at the same time. If it was not for modding, so many innovations to instruments would never have happened.

Fingers, not sure what your driving at but , Im pretty busy these days guitar-wize. I have a large collection, many of which are on loan to a local music school for the exclusive use of needy students, I actively play in a Blues group (the over the hill gang-all old farts like me) and a Rock group (currently morphing into a Who tribute band for unknown reasons)-no paid gigs mind you , but I'm havin a blast. I am also in the process of launching a new Web site focusing on collecting vintage guitars, and -finally , I'm doing a lot of repairs/resorations on the side. I have several hundred vintage guitars in storage (temp/humid controlled storage), but I also keep a hundred or so around to play in regular rotation. Everything is cataloged etc and available relatively quickly. Its a full time job, but a labor of love !!

Compared to the tens (or hundreds?) of thousands of guitars that Ibanez has manufactured, only a handful can be classified as truly "special". The AR5000 is one of these "special" guitars. I guess I know that because I'm a collector. :-)

Compared to what it could have been, the condition of this guitar is a shame. Maybe things would be different had the previous owner(s) appreciated more it's special nature as a truly fine instrument.

Then again, maybe all the damage was unavoidable and accidental? Like John McLaughlin's doubleneck falling over and splitting in two. Another shame.
