Help identifty my strange iceman!

Author Message   Svein Username: Svein Registered: 03-2006 Posted on Monday, March 27, 2006 - 7:47 am:    hey! seems to me you guys would be the right ones to ask about this. i bought an iceman a while back and i can't for the life of me figure out what model or year it is. here's a cheap pic: the only iceman i've seen yet that resembles it is the one purplefenderboy posted a few threads back. notice the narrower twelfth fret inlays, on all the other icemen i've seen (probably not too many, but still) they have been wider. also, the binding resembles purplefenderboy's, as does the color and those strange metal pieces under the knobs. now for what doesn't make too much sense: obviously the guitar has been torn to pieces to install the floyd and replace the pickups. it looks to me like a good chunk of the guitar has actually been sawed out and replaced, then repainted/finished (not very well.) the truss rod cover is missing and i can't find a serial number on the back of the headstock, and certainly not on a necplate since it's not a bolt on. as if that wasn't enough i don't think i've ever seen an iceman with the pickup switch down by the knobs. when i bought the guitar (not from the original owner) i was told it was a '79 and i have no reason to believe the seller was taking me for a ride. he might've been misinformed, i don't know. thanks!   Skybone Username: Skybone Registered: 03-2001 Posted on Monday, March 27, 2006 - 10:31 am:    If it's been resprayed, it's possible that they've covered the serial no. up. The control layout suggest's it may be from around 1980ish, as pre '80 guitars had 2 Vol & 2 Tone layout (except the PS10, which had the 2 Vol & 1 Tone like yours). You can buy replacement TRC's on eBay, if you don't mind them being mirrored.   Svein Username: Svein Registered: 03-2006 Posted on Monday, March 27, 2006 - 3:57 pm:    looks like the only repainted bit is a square around the pickups and bridge, probably necessitated by the presumably extensive rebuilding that's been going on + the complete back of the headstock... i cannot comprehend what would give someone the idea to do paint the back of the headstock, but that's what it looks like. the serial # would've been there on a model like this, right? would it've been ink or stamped into the wood? here's a bigger pic of the body where you can see the finish changes to the right of the pickups, this runs down way past the bridge on both sides, then stops about an inch away from the binding: other strange things: by the rear strap button (located as far back on the body as can come, by the rear tip) there's a triangular indention that evens out to the back of the body towards the top. i've seen this on pics of some really old icemen, but any documentation of the back of the guitars is scarce in my findings. it looks like the 3 knobs > jack configuration also consistent with some of the older guitars i see at hartman's iceman pages (http://vintageibanez.tripod.com/2663models.html to be exact.) could the refinish all the way down the guitar be a sign of a missing huge tailpiece? i'm just guessing in fifty directions here, 'cause i ain't got a clue! thanks again!   Skybone Username: Skybone Registered: 03-2001 Posted on Monday, March 27, 2006 - 4:59 pm:    Like you say, the indent on the rear is consistent with the older 2663 model's like Purplefenderboy has, if this is so, then it could be a pre serial no. model (also like PFB's), explaining why you can't find it. Look's like someone has made a real hash of it, hope they didn't ask too much for it!
