I am looking for a clean example of an MC 400 NT. Unless you live in the Philly area and have one that has alot of dings just below the neck (which may have been mine at one time -I would pay a real premium to get mine back)!!

Beautiful! I LOVE the neck wood. Really seems to glow nicely. Did the MC400's come with aluminum cases, or did you have to pay extra to get one?

Back in 1979, mine came with an aluminum case, but it was another $100. The guitar itself was $500. (And, the horror, $250 of that was offset by my trade-in: a 2387 Korina.)

I'm sure some people think I overpaid for the bass I just bought, but it was the bass I wanted, in excellent plus condition, so I got it.
It is what it is, as Bobzilla would say. something about the value being something...How does it go Bob? He's got a good way of putting it. Anyways, you can't really overpay in my book if the price is what you can/are willing to pay. Now, if you're in the used guitar business, and you have to turn around and make a profit to stay in business, well, then you MUSTN't overpay if you hope to resell it! I intend on playing my bass, and hopefully it will appreciate by the time i sell it, if indeed I ever do.

I agree. Although, it is us romantic collectors that are driving up prices for the investors here. I'm sure my estate will lose money on all my guitars. I don't intend on selling any of my prized guitars which hopefully, this 400 will become.

Being the owner of both an MC400NT and an MC900NT, I congratulate you both on your acquisitions and welcome you to the club! They are completely fabulous guitars.

The Musician family deserves its rightful place alongside the Artist family. I know we have a lot of rabid Artist fans on ICW, but it's good to know there are a bunch of Musician freaks around as well.

That's 200 guitars a day, assuming they take one day a week off. 5000 divided by 25 is 200. That's a lot of guitars in one day.

Well it came yesterday! It is in very good condition. Of course, it has the corroded bridge - a sign that it was played by sweaty hands. But it feels as though it has sat for about 20 years after that. The frets have an oxidative coating. What is the best/easiest way to clean them off?

You could tape off the fretboard and the pickups and use quadruple ott steel wool, but the steel wool particles go everywhere. I use Mother's Mag Aluminum Polish from Pep Boys, or some auto parts/detailing supplies store.

Put just a touch on a cotton cloth, like an old tee shirt, tape off the fretboard, and polish away! Makes Stainless Steel frets shine like mirrors! After you polish them, go over them with a dry portion of the cloth to remove the residue. DON"T use it on ANY of the gold parts!!! They will no longer be gold if you do.

Remove the tape and finish the fretboard with Lemon oil, the kind you get at the guitar store, not furniture polish. Furniture polish leaves wax buildup and crap on it.

Don't use Linseed oil either. It stinks, leaves the fretboard gunky, is toxic, and makes your fretboard look dirtier faster. I hate the stuff, refuse to use it! Plus, when you play your guitar afterwards, it makes your fingers stink!

My MC900 bass arrived yesterday! Thing is NICE! It looks like all it did was literally sit in it's case. The bridge is not even slightly corroded, the finish is still shiny, the chrome plate still has the writing on it in DARK INK, not fading out ANYWHERE, and it still has the Made In Japan sticker on the back of the neck. I don't think it was put on there by the seller, based on how good everything else looks. It looks like it literally just left the factory. Sounds great too, although it has flatwound string on it, which I don't like. I'm going to restring it with rounwounds and see how it is.

This BS again

Raw linseed oil is not toxic.

And you don't drink it anyway. Lemon oil is toxic if you drink it.

It seems this is eternal question and some people try to put the simple and cheap linseed oil down. Somebody even wrote on a web site that Dan Erlewine uses boiled linseed oil while he writes in his book that raw linseed oil is best for ebony and rosewood fretboards. "... Many say that linseed oil stays on the fretboard and frets, remains sticky and never dries. I don't understand that - they're doing something wrong. I have used the same can of linseed oil for 30 years - it is still good, and still works its magic. This oil penetrates well into the wood and if remowed quickly and thoroughly, feels dry to the touch. ... "

No, you don't need a stud, because they have sheetrock anchors. They go in pretty firmly and hold the guitar well. I don't have any that are pulling away from the wall. Of course, if I can find a stud, I'll use it for added protection. But studs are spaced 16" on center, which I find to be too close together to hang the guitars (they look crowded). In my living room, it has a vaulted ceiling and there is actually plywood under the sheetrock, so all the guitars in that room (9 currently) are anchored into wood.

It's just how the house was built. We bought the house (or, signed for it, anyway) before construction started, and we would visit it every couple of weeks. It was great to walk through it as a shell before the drywall went up, because you could see where the pipes were, etc. The living room vaulted ceiling wall is loadbearing and was reinforced from top to bottom, hence the plywood over the studs. I had nothing to do with the design, but appreciate that it's there. Nice and sturdy, for sure.

It's not BS. Boiled linseed oil, which you get at Home Depot, comes in a metal can, is flammable, and toxic. The label states that clearly. I'm sorry if that offends you. Maybe you should read the label . Anyways, I have nothing against raw linseed oil. When most people mention linseed oil, they're talking about the boiled kind. I know several repairman around here who use the stuff, and by the time the guitar comes across my bench, the fretboards are gunky, and the people want ME to clean it off 'cuz their fretboards are disgusting and smelly. I have a guitar that I've been playing for over a year now, the fretboard is clean, I used lemon oil. I like Erlewine, he knows his stuff. I'm glad he doesn't use BOILED linseed oil.

Whisperer, you wrote: "Don't use Linseed oil either. ..."
If somebody uses boiled linseed oil in a wrong way or better say for a wrong purpose, it doesn't mean all kind of linseed oil is bad for guitars. Boiled linseed oil is intended to use as paint or preserving stuff for garden furniture and such like not as lubricating oil for dry fretboard.
What comes to raw linseed oil you have to know how to use it.

Raw linseed oil has many health benefits. That's why I feed it to my dog, his fur is shinier, and he seems to have more energy. Hopefully it helps with his skin tumors. He's a golden retriever, very cute. Boiled linseed oil is poisonous, flammable, and residuous, that's all I'm saying. Most people when they say linseed oil, they mean the boiled kind. Boiled linseed oils stinks, and gunks up fretboards. I'm switching to mineral oil anyway, I think it's less offensive.

Frets are actually brass, believe it or not! They mix nickel into the alloy in different percentages to make it harder. In guitar use, the common percentages are 12% or 18%, 18% nickel-silver being the hardest. That's why they call it nickel-silver, 'cuz the nickel makes 'em silver. However, I would not use brasso on frets. I like the Mothers because it takes just a teeny tiny bit to polish the frets, and there's less chance of it getting on the fretboard, and it's not a pure liquid, so it wouldn't soak in. I use so little on my polishing cloth, that you'd almost think it wasn't there. I've seen some repairman use Jeweler's rouge. Plus brasso seems to be purely chemical in nature, while the mothers seems to be a fine abrasive mix, as well as a mild chemical formulation. Mother's formula is secret, so I'm not absolutely sure what's in it. Brasso has a lot of fumes, seems reallyt harsh to me. I'd hate for that to soak into the wood.

Linseed oil wouldn't have a "fishy" odor? One of my guitars smells a little fishy. I love the guitar though and would like to get rid of the smell. Any suggestions?

BTW, I am having a small problem with the 400. It seems to keep breaking the high E string at the nut. I don't see anything but haven't looked with a magnifying lens yet. I'll probably just take to the local luthier.

Sometimes when the plastic parts like the binding or the pickguards deteriorate, they can smell fishy, or it could be the fretboard.

Actually, I have Fender fretboard cleaner and oil and had already used it before I took those pictures. Maybe the direct sunlight I took the picture in makes it look dirtier. The cleaner smells like acetone (nail polish remover) and I don't know what the oil is. I didn't put a whole lot of oil on. Up close (and not in the sun) the fretboard looks pretty nice now. It's the first time it was ever cleaned.

And here's a spooky twist. You know how I thought my serial number was D783502 while yours is D789498, Grateful? And we wondered how they could be 6,000 apart when they were made in the same month? Well, on closer inspection, mine is D789502, which puts us just 4 apart on the production line. They literally could have been on the same workbench at the same time! They truly are sisters.
