Interesting....is that an ash top? cos the earlier ones were maple weren't they? Why only one bid? Does no-one trust a seller with zero feedback? (I wouldn't!) |

Tim: I have 4 catalogs that show the Artist double neck. The earliest two: 12/77 and 2/78 call it the 2640 model. In both, the guitar is described as mahogany and maple. Interestingly, the 12/77 catalog says both necks are 24 frets, but the picture clearly shows 22 frets on both (must be a misprint). The picture shows the distinctively subtle AV finish that looks like it was applied by hand. There's also a black plastic ring around the neck selector toggle switch that has 12 and 6 printed in white. The 2640 in the 2/78 catalog is identical, except the Tri-sound mini toggles are black rather than gold and there is no black ring around the neck selector toggle. The AV burst finish is distinctly dark on the edges and changing to the lighter color quickly. This looks like it was a spray job. The picture is devoid of wood grain (almost looks like a solid color 2 tone paint job). The other two catalogs are from 12/81 and 4/83. Both guitars are now called the AR1200 and described as solid ash and have the newer style headstock inlay. The 12/81 has the wide Gibraltar I lock-down bridges seen on the early 2640 models. The 4/83 AR1200 sports the newer, svelt Gibraltar II bridges. It would be nice to narrow down what year the Artist doubleneck went from maple/mahogany to all ash. Anybody have catalogs for '79 thru '81? |

I have an '81 AR1200 Doubleneck (AV) that I'm selling. Does anyone know how I can tell if the body is maple or ash? |

Solid ash. Here's a link to the 81 cat http://www.ibanezrules.com/catalogs/us/1981/index.htm js |

Jason: You'd be able to see a difference in the top (maple) and the bottom (mahogany) woods vs. a solid ash guitar. As Jeff says, the '81 should be solid ash. |
