I copied this update from the web site http://www.rebeats.com. Thanks to everyone for your prayers and for keeping an eye out for the Peavey Bass. Now let's look for the Ibanez Bass.
peace,
chevy

"ED BAIRD UPDATES:

TRUST FUND ESTABLISHED: Donations can be sent to: First Bank, Attn. Erica Bennett, 102 S Main, Mt Pleasant, Michigan 48858. Checks should be made payable to "Friends of Ed Baird". Tanya Baird will have sole access to these funds to use as she sees fit in getting through this very difficult time. Future plans include establishment of scholarships to Interlochen, where Ed spent several years in the vocal program.

Ed Baird, 37-year-old co-owner of Mt Pleasant's GUITAR CENTRAL music store, was the victim of a robbery and assault on Thursday July 6 at 6 P.M. UPDATE 7-17-00: After more than a week in intensive care the doctors have no explanation for the most recent development; Ed has come out of his coma and is communicating. He recognizes visitors, answers questions, and has been taken off the respirator. His condition has been upgraded from critical to fair.

Details of the events are sketchy, and information is still being gathered by local and regional law-enforcement task forces. Rewards are being
offered for information which leads to the arrest and conviction of the people responsible for this crime: $1,000.00 from local law enforcement, plus $5,000.00 from friends and associates of Ed Baird. To provide information, contact the tip hotline at 517-773-0808, extension 111.

What is known so far: Ed was found laying face down in front of his shop, bleeding from the head. A newer model Gold Malibu or Impala with white
Michigan "Tourist" plates was seen speeding from the scene with two white males in their 20s. One of them may have had black hair or a ball cap.

Instruments taken include: Peavey 5-string Millenium Bass Guitar Serial number 10932000 (Ruby Red; a transparent finish) and Ibanez SD-GR SR485-SOL 5-string bass guitar in an oiled wood (natural mahogany) finish. Picture of Ibanez: (Thanks to Mike Morse of Hoshino for expediting
this photo!!)

Update 7-17-00: The Peavey bass turned up in Ohio: A shop in Cleveland sold it on Ebay to a man in Florida. After bidding on the internet auction
he was alerted to the crime by a Peavey bulletin board and emailed Rob Cook. He won the auction, confirmed the serial number, and the police were notified. Lakewood, Ohio, police have confiscated the instrument and obtained the identity (photo ID, social security #) of the Michigan resident who sold the guitar to the shop. Mt Pleasant police also spoke to the dealer and indicated officers are going to Ohio for further questioning.

MEDIA ERRATA: A July 14 Morning Sun article referred to the above-mentioned music scholarship plans "as a memorial to Baird". We would have
preferred that the wording been "as a tribute to Baird" since he is, in fact, still with us. All in all, the Morning Sun (and Stephen Frye in particular)
have been very helpful and cooperative; the exposure they have given this situation is very much appreciated and we all hope they will continue to play this event very large at least until the perpetrators are in custody.

NOTE TO MEDIA: Please DO NOT contact immediate family members directly at this time. If you need information only the family can provide, contact Marcy Kehoe at 517-289-3896. This is NOT a number the media or general public should use casually for updates on Ed's condition, etc- use with discretion!!"

ED BAIRD UPDATES: 7-19: One of the suspects is now in custody- see below!!

A note from Rob Cook:

I'd like to thank the person (unknown at this writing) who placed the blurb on the Peavey Website Guitar Forum mentioning the attack. That blurb prompted Peavey fan Charlie (last name deleted at request) of Florida to contact me Sunday night July 16. Charlie gave the ebay auction number (379876615) to me, explaining that although there was a picture of the peghead, the serial number was impossible to read. I went to the auction (which by now had ended, with Charlie the winner) and copied the photo. I took it to Adobe Photoshop for enlargement, enhancement, and shading in an attempt to clarify the number. I concluded that while it was impossible to absolutely verify the number, it was also impossible to rule it out. I immediately phoned Charlie (getting him out of bed, as it was now about midnight) and told him more about Ed and his situation. Charlie agreed to confirm the serial number as soon as possible Monday morning. Monday morning Charlie's wife phoned to tell me they had confirmed the number. She also called the Mt Pleasant police.
To follow up I also called the Mt Pleasant police and gave them the auction number, Charlie's number, and the number of the swap shop.

The police acted immediately; they went to Ohio and interviewed the staff at "Musician's Swap and Shop". They obtained the description and positive ID of the person who sold the guitar there. As a result they were able to make a surprise arrest of Jason Glenn Kilgore, 21, at his home in Haslett on 7-18-00. They impounded his vehicle, a 1999 gold Malibu, as evidence. Kilgore is lodged in the Isabella County Jail on $500,000. bond.

Kilgore: (photos not copied, see the rebeats web site)

Kilgore has implicated a second suspect: Adrian Edward Gervais, 23, of Lansing. A warrant has been issued for Gervais on the same charges, unarmed robbery. That warrant joins other outstanding warrants for probation violations stemming from misdemeanor assault charges in Ingham County. A picture of Gervais will be posted here soon.

The police investigation is continuing- it must be stressed that witnesses are still needed. At this point the only charges formally leveled are for unarmed robbery, a 15-year felony. The obvious question is why, with Ed nearly having died, this is just considered a robbery. It's because police still do not know exactly how Ed sustained his injuries. They can only get warrants and go to court with charges they can prove beyond reasonable doubt. This is why it's important we hear from more witnesses. If you know anything, no
matter how insignificant, please call the tip hotline at 517-773-0808, ext 111.

Congratulations to Officers Griffin and Tuma of the MPPD and the investigation's coordinating officer Shell. Officers Yeagley and Lyon have also been helpful. These guys are all working very hard. Sure, it's their job but it is obvious that they are responding to a tremendously emotional community show of concern for Ed.

Thanks are also due to local media; TV 9&10 has been particularly generous with their coverage and the Morning Sun has been great. Sun reporter Stephen Frye has been on top of things, and editor Rick Mills has generously donated space for reward ads.

-------------------------------------------------------

So, let's not stop here. Check the rebeats web site often for updates and to get a picture of the second suspect. And keep checking the ads for
an Ibanez Bass for sale!

peace,
chevy
