This looks similar to my Cimar, which has a lovely sunburst look, all red and orange, but dark. The pickguard has butterflys carved on it. The edge looks like ebony. I love the action on this, and the narrow neck is great for my short fingers! I bought mine in 1980 from Jim's House of Guitars in San Diego. It's the only guitar I have right now, but I love it. The tone is firm, with a good mid range and bass. I've never ever seen another one like it. |

I bought one in 1985. It's the first and only guitar I have ever owned! I LOVE IT!!! |

The M340 I once owned, before it was stolen, was completely blonde: spruce top, curly maple back/sides, hard rock maple neck with gold appointments and abalone inlays... Have any of you seen this guitar? (I still have the 1977 catalog with its picture and description.) |

Hi John Had one back in the early 80's - thought it would be a nice addition to the 698 burst I had. In the end it wasn't much to my lking - lacked the depth of tone the 698 had and the neck was slower than a 300lb tackle on a pass rush! Nice looking axe though. In the final analysis (for me only) the 340 went to a new home and I still have the 698 and an identical 698-12 27 years later. Says it all I guess. Cheers Russ |

Russell: Well, I don't have a 698 to compare my NW40 to (as far as I can tell it's virtually the same as the M340), but I have to agree with you about the neck. I picked up the NW40 this weekend, for the first time in a month, my thumb felt the strain when playing bar chords. Here's a link to a '74 catalog page showing the 698s. Which do you have? http://www.break-even.org/ibzscans/1974FB/74accusitc-3.jpg These are Gibson Jumbo replicas, right? I've seen a number of these on ebay. Recently I saw the electric version. We could use some more information in the Acoustics section. Maybe you could start a thread on your 698s. Any pictures and thoughts would be appreciated by all. |

Hi John - The 6 is the earlier (74) straight acoustic model with the plain pickguard but in the burst finish (pic enclosed). The 12 is also in the burst finish but with the flower power pickguard (it was the 70's after all). I've also had a number of 627's and 628's but they don't come close to the tonal quality of the 698 so they've gone to new homes as well. Closest thing I've ever played in terms of action is an Alvarez AJ60-12 (which has also gone to a new home) but nothing else for the killer tone. The six has had a hard life body wise (I couldn't afford cases back then) but I won't refinish it because I'll lose that tonal quality. The 12 is near mint. As a tribute to the 698-12 I would have to say that the only other acoustics that have stayed for more than a couple of months are a Martin D12X1 and the aforementioned AJ60-12. |

Can someone give some general guidelines on what these go for? I've got a flower pickguard 6-string model 698 in very good cond. Not sure what it's worth. |
