Hi! Probably another dumb question but, I have seen an '86 Acoustic described as being "Spruce top; Rosewood fretboard & Nato neck and sides. Can anyone tell me what "Nato" is please?

Fendouglas, Nato is basically a solid tone wood, it's used a fair bit in construction in entry level model guitars from many manufactures, cause it's cheaper to buy than Mahogany.

To CSI merchants , I am mearly trying to generalise in laymens terms thank you !

This explanation floats around the net

"Nato wood, also known as Eastern Mahogany, is a reliable, strong wood used on guitar necks. It is a value-priced wood used more for beginner instruments. However, it still embodies all of the properties of more commonly used mahogany"

Then there are also other explanations and a synonym "natyah".

These interesting sentences popped up:

"Softer hardwoods such as nato, mahogany, walnut, koa and maple are excellent and less expensive alternatives to rosewood. Hardwood veneers are used in the back and sides of most guitars costing under $2000. Hardwood veneers have 95% of the musical properties of solid hardwood but are stronger, less prone to cracking and relatively inexpensive."

I think Koa is a pretty expensive wood...,
... or an expensive pretty wood...huh???

As our former professor used to say:"Ach, Sie spielen Wort?" (Ah, you're into word games?)
