My friend has a guitar with that modelname on the inside (684)... We're there any "remakes" of this guitar, or is there a way I can tell if it's a legitimate ibanez concord from the years when they were being made? I heard that the price people sell them for lies around $200, is that about right? |

Howdy! There were actually 2 models of the 684 (which was a copy of the Gibson Hummingbird), a 12 and a 6 string. I'll assume you are referring to the 6 string version.
As of Dec. 2004 there were 22 684s auctioned on ebay. The high price was $479.00, the low was $200.00 and the average was $313.00. Interestingly, the 12 strings don't get much more money; in the $225.00-$525.00 range.
You don't have to worry about telling a fake or reissue from the originals. They are not that well known or sought after to be worth the effort. |

This was just the answer I was looking for! Thank you very much! The condition of the guitar is alright, the fretboard is in good condition, but the guitar does have a few visible marks, especially on the back. I might even buy it from him (since I think it's in good enough condition).. we'll see=)

Hello all...Just purchased a 684 at a local guitar shop. Not mint but not beat up either. Was looking for a used guitar and someone just walked by and handed it to me. Looking for information like what brand of strings are used. What is a good cleaner conditioner for a vintage guitar. Didn't research the 684 and was surprised at the going price. Really like this guitar...Thank you for any info...Ed |

For anyone interested I put a 12 string 684 Hummingbird copy on ebay. It needs to be repaired though. It appears that the bridge was pulling up and has a couple screws in it to hold it down. I just read that these guitars are not very common. If so, I hope that someone that knows how to fix it will be able to get it.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you -
1. For strings I'd suggest something on the lighter end - the bridges are prone to lifitng (as noted by the post above) with heavier strings. I personally prefer to run the Elixir Custom Lights (PolyWeb) in 11-52 partly because I hate changing strings and partly because they offer a good balance between punch and protection. If the bridge is starting to liftr even 10-46 would do.
2. Conditioning wise you can't go too far past the Jim Dunlop system for a great result.

I have had my 684BK for 30 years from new. It's a bit road worn right now but it's still a lovelly guitar to play and one which I shall keep and treasure always. Strings wise I have used a variety over the years, usually medium guage (13-56) phospher bronze. In the early days of my ownership I used Guild M350's a lot and was very pleased with the sound produced. These days I cannot seem to find Guild strings anywhere in the UK so I use D'Addarrio or Rotosounds. I use Elixers on my Martin D18 and are very pleased with them also, so maybe I shall try those on the the 684.

I have an Ibanez Concord (early '70s build date) that is a replica of the Gibson "Dove" acoustic, I see the Hummingbirds all the time, but never the Dove.
Is this rare or soemthing ? It plays and sounds quite nice. I would almost say "fantastic" but you might think I'm exaggerating. B] |
