I read online that it isn't a good idea to put heavy gauge steel strings on old acoustics because they weren't made to take the stress of the newer, heavier strings. And because the wood is old. Is this true? I have 1976 Concert Grand Concert and was wondering if medium gauge strings would be OK. Any comments? |

Medium (.013+) strings exert a lot more pressure on the neck than light strings so if there's anything not 100% right with your neck you raise the chance of having probems. Also using medium strings will reduce the amount of time before you neck needs resetting. The price of tone! |

Let me add that many of the early Ibanez acoustics are prone to lifting of the bridge when used with heavier gauge strings and I've seen on sample that was strung with heavy bottoms and light tops where the neck was actually warped. For the vintage equipment I prefer to stick with lights (9's or 11's) and let the body do the work. Cheers Russ |
