I've found this Ibanez Concord 12-string I'm about to buy. It's said it's from 1978 and from the looks it might be a 670-12(?) with a black top (refinished?!) and maple neck, sides and back.

Does anyone know anything bout this guitar?

It looks like a 670-12 that had the top painted.
Great guitar IMO.I have one,a '78 also.Very bright, lets the octave strings ring through nice.
I've played other 12's with a darker tone, nice in their own right, but just doesn't cut through the same.

Oh... the humanity!

Well, at least they didn't f*** up the beautiful flamed maple sides (can't see the back).

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but I have just inherited an old 12-string Ibanez Concord. The number on the inside reads 670-12. The guitar is in beautiful shape. It has an interesting strip of wood down the center along the seam that doesn't seem to match the rest of the wood. It has a beautiful sound. Can anyone tell me how I would find out its year or what it's worth? I don't want to sell it... I'm just curious. Thank you!

Booboo:

As far as year of manufacture for acoustics, it can only be narrowed down using the serial number (if it has one). That should be on the label inside or imprinted on the neck block inside the guitar.

If it doesn't have a serial number then all that can be said is it's an early one...before they started using serial numbers. I see the model in the '75, '76 and '78 catalogs, but not after that.

Hi Johns,
Thank you very much for your response. I found the serial number on the neck block: E770830. Is there a website I can check to date it?

Hi Booboo,

If they used the same numbering system as the electrics, yours would have been made in May (E) of 1977 (77xxxx). According to the catalogue I saw, the center strip of wood is "Jacaranda" wood (whatever that is), while the rest of the back & sides are maple.

I just bought a 671/12 (the next model up) on eBay yesterday for $225. I'll post more when it arrives, so we can compare notes.

Congratulations on the purchase, John! I'll look forward to hearing your review. Thank you for the info on the guitar, too.

Jacarandah is Eucalyptus Marginata, an Australian hardwood. It's very dense and is usually a very deep red colour. It has a very pleasant aroma (I know from years of chopping winter deliveries of it for firewood). When it's aged, it's almost impossible to saw through by hand.

Thanks Blues! That's helpful to know. I'd never heard of it before.

I'll have to give her a sniff, when she gets here.
