I have a custom built Spanish Classical guitar built by Elger of Ardmore, PA. I believe the company was sold to Hoshino in 1972 and eventually became part of Ibanez. Does anyone have any information about who built this guitar or know of any other Elger guitar owners? |

Jrapp: The story of Elger guitars and how it evolved into the Ibanez we know today is more complicated than that. The details are chronicled in Michael Wright's Guitar Sories Vol. 1. According to Michael and Mr. Rosebloom the transition from Elger brand-name guitars to Ibanez took place in the mid to late 60s. During the transition, some Elger named guitars were Japanese products. Elger guitars from approx. 1959 to 1965 were probably made in Ardmore PA. What model Classical do you have? Does it have a serial number or does it say "Made in Japan"? Tell us more about it. Do you have any pictures of it? |

Hey, thanks for responding. I'll check out the book in question. The guitar doesn't have a model or serial number. I've never photographed it either. The label seen through the soundhole is a long black oval with gold lettering. "ELGER" is spelled in script, like a logo, and beneath it in smaller type it says "CUSTOM BUILT". Then, in smaller letters below that, it says, "ARDMORE, PA". It's not a really special or great guitar, but I've beat the hell out of it for many years and it keeps playing. |
