I got a chance to play what looks like an early 80's (Based on the type of Pat Pending Velve Tunes)Acoustic guitar with vine lnlay similar to the 1/2 vine LP 's and the CN250. Nice guitar with what appears to be rosewood basck and sides and a spruce top. Nice sounding guitar (although admittedly I am no expert when it comes to acoustic guitars)but I just cannot find any information on this,,,I would appreciate any info the "gang" can provide.. |

Hello Dave, The Model you’re referring to is a V390 and is listed in my early Ibanez & Tama Price Book. It’s listed under the Vintage deluxe series under Tama Guitars and is a D-size model with the Tree of life inlay with Rosewood back and sides. There were two others in that series as well and they were the v360 and the v380. The v390 was the top of the line in this series and listed for 375.00 in the Jan 15, 1979 Ibanez & Tama book. I have in my collection a 1976 acoustic that came from the NAMM show in Calif. It’s a 699-12 model 12 string with a Spruce Top, Maple Fingerboard and Maple Rims and Back. The serial number on this puppy is 0001 and I play it all the time, Sounds great for Neil young & CSN covers. I believe Ibanez copied it from one of the Guild models and of course sold it for a lot less! I’m not into Acoustics like I’m into the Electrics but I have laid my hands on some VERY FINE wooden boxes from Ibanez and would never think of letting them go. By the way, the Scruggs with the Tree of Life got here yesterday. It’s definitely unique from the others I have regarding the neck. And some other cool minor differences like a brass 3 way selector switch with a round piece of Abalone in the top of it. I kept seeing something sparkle and thought what the heck is this, I thought it had a damn LED built in it!!! Also, unlike every other Scruggs or artist I have, the brass control cavity plate is drilled in a different area. No extra holes, I just thought that was strange because all those brass plates on every other Ibanez I have are exactly alike. Pretty cool we all look for this stuff as it proves someone actually did something by hand in those days which explains the differences we encounter from time to time on our guitars! (Very nice guitar with zero fret wear and original) The guitar looked great, but when I picked her up and was checking out the body, it felt like a sand pit of dirt! Those ash bodies are hard to spot dirt on so I spent the day taking everything apart and cleaning everything! I made the choice to replace all the hardware with some new old stock I had sitting around but only had one new old stock Super 80 for the guitar! So I need to hunt for one that looks new with 4 leads (including ground). I will post some pics when I get her finished. A couple days ago I found a vintage BC RICH MOCKINGBIRD….. From back in the day!!! ON EBAY and in mint shape… one owner. I can’t wait to play it! |

The 4 lead type are very hard to find as NOS...I restored a Scruggs by switching the cover for the Bridge PUP..Its a real pain, but with patience it can be done-(interesing enough the NOS pup i stole the cover from had ZEBRA bobbins on it ! Weird HUH ?)..The NOS two lead type seem to be avail still (theres a guy in canada that has a bunch of them and is selling on EBAY-I boought a few from him)..The scruggs your talking about -is it the same one I think ? are you Deldeal ? I need to talk to you .Please send me your phone number via private email. So you think the Acoustic is a '79 ? Sounds about right..I really like it , and its the only accoustic I own ! Doesn't say Tama on it though, the Inlay is the newer Ibanez "Block" logo. Any Idea how long this series lasted ? Any other info ? How 'bout a cat scan ? Thanks again Dave |
