I think the intention was to copy the J-200. They sort of messed up and used some features from the 70's Gibson incarnation of that once-great guitar. In particular the bridge, and the adjustable saddle thing they put on there, are not so great. The look on the early copies is pretty good though, the neck inlays are pretty close and the pickguard graphic is also cool. The top is laminated though, I believe.

Ericsson is correct in that it was a J-200 copy attempt but the top is actually solid Spruce.

The Gibson was not real popular compared to some of their guitars. It was a huge, premium acoustic, some famous guys played them... Keith Richards had one, Jimmy Page recorded White Summer on a borrowed J-200. They are quite valuable if from the 50's, $5000 and up. A nice Ibanez version goes for way, way less!

So what would you expect to pay for a near mint Ibanez 758 with original hard case?

Rich, with these classic model acoustics one in near mint condition, I would expect to pay between $1400.00 to $1650.00 for a absolute minty.

Here's a family portrait of the guitars in question from my 1975 catalogue...enjoy

Captain Ibanez :)

There is a serial# inside my 758 where the neck comes through the body, it reads 751126. I guess 75 = 1975, what does the 1126 mean? 26 November?

Nice guitar. I like the photos. They went a little crazy with the fleur-de-lis inlay didn't they?

That sounds really high to me. It is a nice guitar and there are not a lot of them to be sure, but as long as you can buy Taylor guitars that are definitely made of solid wood for half that price if you look. I'm not trying to say one guitar is better, simply that the price qouted is insane!
