Do all of the Ibanez Futuras (Modernes) have a serial number stamped into the back of the headstock? Is there such a thing as a 1975 Futura without a serial number as with the Destroyers and the Rocket Roll Srs? Thanks, - Pete |

I don´t know about the serial numbers, but I have seen a few Ibanez Modernes with an "open book" headstock.... Harry |

I have a theory that the switch from open book to Ibanez headstocks coincides with the addition of serial numbers to Ibanez replicas. Would that be a correct assumption? Since the Ibanez headstocks appeared as of the 1976 catalog and the serial numbers started in 1975. I guess there could have been some overlap, but only by a few months. |

Dave - Does that make it a 75? Does it have tophat knobs or speed knobs? Thanks, - Pete |

I believe it to be a '75, the knobs are tophat (reflector type) but I am not positive on the authenticity of those knobs,.. |

Dave - That syncs up with what I was thinking. The guy on eBay that is sending me the Futura listed it as a 76 but I believe it to be a 75 because it does not have a serial number stamped on the back of the headstock and because it has the tophat knobs. I have a 75 Destroyer with the same configuration. It's my belief that in 76 Ibanez started stamping the serial numbers on the headstocks and changed to speed knobs for all 3 of the so-called "Golden Oldies". My only doubts at this point are the pickups. I have always *assumed* that Super 70s were on all of the Golden Oldies but now I'm not so sure. I believe the Super 70s were on the 76 and later models but I'm not so sure about the 75 models. I think you had run a thread a while back asking what kind of pickups you had in your Futura. Once my Futura arrives, I'll take the Destroyer apart and see what it has in it and see if they match what you have in your Futura. The only question then becomes, "if they're not Super 70s, then what are they?" Any ideas? - Pete |

Peter, I never got a decent answer to the question. Perhaps other pre serial number Futura owners will chime in |

Chuck The serial numbers start from August 1975. At least, until now, we never found an older serial number then H 75xxxx. I have never seen a new "Guild-style" headstock combined with a 1975 serial number, however, I´ve seen some open book headstocks combined with early 1976 serials. So there is an overlap of at least 6 or 7 month. Kind greetz, Harry |

I´ve looked it up: I have a D76 Les Paul, an F76 Les Paul and even a G76 ES 345, all three with open book headstocks. So the "overlap" of open book in combination with a serial number is almost a year. Harry |
