Ebay Item #270169425731 VERY interesting. It's got the LP body and neck, but with a 1977 serial number (very late in the game for an LP clone). But the tuners, pickguard, bridge and tailpiece all say "Performer" to me. And then there are the flying finger pups. It seems to me too much work for someone to have hybridized this thing together unless it came directly out of the Fujigen shop. Thoughts? -Chuck |

Chuck, Nothing particulary interesting here. ALL of the '77 clones had this same hardware including the S80's, fancy tailpiece, girbralter bridge and the weird pickguard. Its not a coincidence that these very "ungibson" like changes coincided with the change in the headstock shape...these '77's are the first stab at moving away from clones and the infamous -and much mis-quoted-"Lawsuit" |

OK, cool. I was just struck by the similarities to the PF's. That pickguard is a PF shape, and I've seen the fancy tailpiece and gibraltar bridge on PF's too. -Chuck |

Chuck...Sure, the PF's started in late '77. I bet those early clones with the Les Paul body were made up (with the new Performer set ups) just to use up the old bodies... |

Dave Not totally correct that all the ´77 clones had this hardware/pickguard configuration. I have ´77 LP copies and even ´78 LP copies that have the regular stop-tailpiece and a "correct" pickguard. I think that some were fitted with these "new" gadgets, maybe just for fun? Or maybe indeed to experiment with some hybrid guitars that could prepare us for the next step: the PF series? Harry |

Harry, Thats basically what I was saying..namely that Ibanez was getting ready to launch the PF series (Lawsuit proof) and had to use up the old parts, and conversely use new parts during the transition years. The PF series was introduced in early '77, with most of the US inventory having '78 dates......Either way, both configurations (clones with old and new hardware) are pretty common.... |
