Where do you guys keep an eye out for the '70s copies. I've e-mailed Rics Vintage Guitars and also Jacksons Rare Guitars. Asked them to hold onto my deatils if anything comes up, but with quests like these its usaully best to put as many feelers out as possible.
I'm still dubious about e-bay and many dealers are in other countries.
I suppose I'm really asking two questions.
1) Where are the places you most commonly keep an eye out for replicas?
2) What sort of money would I expect to pay for a good condition SG or LP or "V" ?
I had the opportunity to buy an SG 2 years ago for $600 Australian It was in good nick except at some point during its history someone has fitted a trem and then removed it so there were a few holes drilled in the body, non original tailpiece and no case. I think back now and I'm still unsure as to weather I missed out on a good thing or if I made the right decion to pass it up.

Check out Global Vintage in Clarence Street, just around the corner from Venue Music. Rene owns the place and is right into vintage jap guitars, but only the good stuff - no bolt-necks. He usually has more Grecos than Ibanezes - which I personally think is better anyway. He charges pretty much at the top of what the market would pay on ebay - 70s Greco LP for $900 which plays very nicely for example. Only problem I have with him is he is a lefty, which means he is evil. And he carries too many evil lefty guitars. There, I said it.
Regarding how much to expect to pay for a SG, LP or V, you shouldn't take that approach. When looking at/for guitars, I decide how much I'm willing to spend. Look in the right places at the right time (which means everywhere, all the time) and you will find something. I bought an SG for $450 and a '67 V for $425 (ebay), both set-neck. I've also found an Iceman for $375 (cash converters, Blacktown). These are all worth more than what I paid, but that's half the thrill of owning them. I would probably spend a max of $650 if I had to replace my SG, but that probably says more about my modest income and hell to pay living expenses than what I think it's worth. I've seen plenty of the copies for much more than that, but didn't feel they were worth - as players anyway - for example a bolt-neck, laminate top LP (Cherry burst, not sure of model number) at Guitar World in Penrith for $750 about a year ago. Yeah right, you gonna throw in 5 years supply of strings with that?!
If the SG you saw was set neck and played good then I think $600 is okay, depending on whether you wanted it more for playing or collector value. I own a 2345W SG Custom (my $450 one) which came factory with the deluxe lyre trem, are you sure it didn't come out with a trem which was later removed? Either way, my SG is my equal favourite - shares the accolades with my 78 IC400 (yes, the $375 one), so it's in good company. I've compared it to a few Gibsons and its blown them all away so far. But if the SG you looked at was bolt-on, then I think $600 is pretty steep. But that's just my opinion. I wouldn't pay more than $250 for any bolt-on Gibson knock-off, Ibanez or otherwise, but I'm more a player than a collector. |

Also Dusty Guitars in Wollongong.. Heaps of JAP Vintage stuff.. Mainly Greco's again.. Greco's are far superior in quality to the Ibanez equivelant.. |

Why is that? I've seen a few of these around for pretty cheap but never really gave them to much attention. Next time i will give them a closer look.
can you pass on any infomation about grecos? |
