Hi Michael I´ll give it a try, but remember: it´s a lot of guessing involved, since the Challenger series were not listed in any catalogue. However, they did appear in the price lists of 1977 and early 1978. But there is no documentation/description or whatsoever. As far as I have been able to trace the Challenger series (only Fender copies) came in production in 1977. Production obviously ended in mid 1978. Until now I´ve found the following models (model numbers always starting with 25) with the addition "Challenger" on the headstock: Strat models: 2575 sunburst, maple fretboard 2575 ASH natural ash, maple fretboard 2575 BK black, maple fretboard 2575 WH white, maple fretboard 2575 R sunburst, rosewood fretboard Tele models: 2552 ASH natural ash, maple fretboard Jazzbas models: 2565 sunburst, maple fretboard 2565 ASH natural ash, maple fretboard 2565 BK black, maple fretboard 2565 WH white, maple fretboard Precision models: 2566 sunburst, maple fretboard 2566 ASH natural ash, maple fretboard 2566 BK black, maple fretboard 2566 WH white, maple fretboard And then there was this strange Les Paul body with a strat-like neck which had also "Challenger" on the headstock. It was said to be original, but there were too many doubts about that guitar to be 100% sure it was. So far the models and the colour variations as they are known to me. Maybe somebody on this board has additions? The quality is considered to be better than the standard models, even better than the "Silver Series" models. The Challenger series had better woods and were constructed out of lesser pieces of wood. I think these Challengers offer the best in craftsmanship any Fender copy could possibly offer. Quality equals the Tokai copies from the early 80´s IMHO. Kind greetz, Harry |
