Here's the scoop. I told a friend that I would refinish a guitar for him (you may have seen the thread where I was asking about the date of manufacture, and thanks john and Les for the help). This is a 74-76 Pre-law Deluxe 59'er Les Paul (opaque ivory finish, maple neck and cream accents) that has had a few mods.
First the guitar was stripped and refinnished (Rattle can job), a third pickup was added and all pickups replaced, other hardware is original. This is also the model with a bolt on neck and a semi hollow body.
The guitar is otherwise in wonderful condition and one of the better playing guitars i've seen. So my question is...
Should I attempt to get this back to a somewhat original appearance or just put a good finish on it?
And where could I get headstock labels for this?

I used to introduce a 1976 Les Paul Deluxe 59er Model here to the people of icw, but it was no hollow-body. they told me that this is a low end axe that is not too collectible. so I would say, if your friend likes the sound of his 3 pus than just go and give her a nice new finish. but if you are going to sell it (as you wrote on yr homepage, let the new buyer dicide.

I think most of the Japanese models will become more collectable/valuable at some point. One thing to consider is that a refinished guitar will never be worth as much as an original one (unless you try to pass it off as original), so if you choose to return this guitar to it's former glory, it will be a labor of love. So I'd say you have carte blanche. There is a certain satisfaction to returning a guitar to original spec.
