Yeah post some photos please - sounds a bit like an L-4 copy. I used linen (what are called "feedsack") kitchen towels to pat the butt end of the case if there is too much room. How's it play and sound ?? And if you don't mind saying, what did you pay ?? |

I paid around $870 ish last year on flea bay. its been around , has a few scratches, some loose binding on the back, but over all pretty clean and decent, i had it set up , and this axe is sweet folks, i mean , you can really hear notes , complex jazz chords wonderfully, im very happy, and ive had many , many guitars over the last 40 or so years, it is the es 175 copy , but not with the gibson headstock, more like the guild headstock, and the finish is fantastic, maybe next for me is gb or ibanez johnny smith, what say you?? |

It was your description that made me think it was an L-4 copy: mahogony back and sides especially, ususally most 175's are maple... Here is a link to a Gibson L-4 currently on eBay, see why I said L-4 copy. http://cgi.ebay.com/Gibson-L4ces-L4-Blonde-Archtop-Electric-Hollowbody_W0QQitemZ 7349240796QQcategoryZ38085QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem And if there is a lable inside your guitar look to see what Model Number it claims to be. That would ice what it's supposed to be in a heartbeat. Still sounds like a great score, $870.00 is VERY reasonable. I've had an all maple Ibanez 175 copy that was great, beat the heck out of a 70's Gibson I'd had. Anyway nice score !! |

WELL, this guitar is mahogony back and sides, but the top im not exactly sure what it is, looks something like, spruce, hemlock, ,maybe even doug fir, im not sure. no sticker inside, no serial number, definately a 175 style but not the gibson type headstock, so, ill try and get some pics, also the iced tea type sunburst, |

I looked at that post on ebay the L 4 . my ibanez top looks similar but mine is what i will call the iced tea sunburst, but it is laminated, my tailpiece is the es 175 type, no sticker inside, no serial # . mahog back and sides, arched, and looks like the guild as opposed to gibson headstock, so, what it is, ?? |

Hi Jazzbo! The Barney Kessel model is featured in the 1971 Ibanez catalogue. Picture shows no brandname on headstock (as none of the guitars and basses do in that catalogue). Never actually saw or heard from a Barney Kessel with Ibanez logo. My pal Hasy has one in his collection, but it's a non-logo example as well. By the way: there never was an Ibanez factory... Ibanez was one of the brand names (like Greco, Antoria etc.) used by the factory Hoshino. I'll put on the actual catalogue picture of the BC for ya. Here it is: Kind greetz, Harry |

There's a couple of Kessell copies on eBay right now matter of fact, that and a fat bodied Trini Lopez copy. They go for pretty cheap compared to a lot of other archtop copies, but I always was afraid I'd hurt myself on those cutaway horns... LOL |

THANKS for that info and for clearing up a few things, i have been looking at those BKs on ebay, the one for $1500. mysteriously disapeared rather quickly, anyway, i think the access to those frets way up there, if you want it, could be cool, also , is the BK, body larger than say a 175 or the same, thanks, |

Here's the Trini Lopez I was talking about... And from my experience there's NO WAY you should be plunking down $1500.00 for one of the Barney Kessel models. http://www.qksrv.net/click-1802666-10381315?loc=http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI .dll%3FViewItem%26item%3D7352897123 |

Right, but this was a Gibson BK starting out for $1500., it seems a few did not sell for around $3000+ guitar center has some on flea bay rite now, maybe lwill look for the ibanez or ventura, although the Epiphone emperor regent single pup looks nice and alot cheaper than the Ibanez joe pass, someone mentioned they didnt like the sound, location of pick up on the IBANEZ JOE PASS,?? |

Harry, I have a question about the tail piece on that Kessel.Have you found that style, with the wooden "crest" used by several different manufacturers or is it something used only with Hoshino? |

Chris, See my reply to your other thread. Until now (but that can be because of my insufficient attention for other manufacturers) I can't tell if these crest-tailpieces also were used by others. Harry |
