My first Ibanez - PF230

Author Message Mk230 Username: Mk230 Registered: 10-2005 Posted on Tuesday, October 18, 2005 - 5:14 pm:    Hi, I'm new here and I hope to eventually pick up an artist and some other nicer Ibanez guitars. But for now I decided to jump into the low-end and buy a PF230 for $350. If I've been ripped off please don't let me know Anyway, I had a few questions about the guitar and old Ibanezes in general. I thought the guitar had replacement pickups since catalog images show gold covers. Are these black pickups likely to be Super 70s? There was one extra pickup in the case which is a super 70 that looks just like the 3 in the guitar. I'm going to take it all apart to check but I was just curious if these look like the correct pickups. The bridge and tailpiece are quite corroded. There's no way to swap out replacement non-Ibanez parts without drilling new holes right? Should I just clean up the hardware with alcohol and steel wool and let it be? Do these guitars have a nitro or poly finish? I was considering trying to fix some large chips and dings on the back of the neck and headstock but I'm not sure what's on there now. Anyway, I'm curious to hear any other thoughts about these guitars. Here's a pic. The bridge PU was replaced with a Duncan but the original was in the case so I think I'll put it back in. The original pickups would have 2 adjustment screws on the left side. The middle and bridge on your's have one on each side, but the surrounds show the correct holes for the original pickups. The neck, middle and the extra pickup in the case are all engraved with "Super 70" on the back and stamped with the number 280710. Is that a serial number that was given to sets of pickups? I notice that the metal bracket on the bottom of the pickup has 3 holes on one side and one on another. So I suppose it's possible to mount it with only one screw on each side. Maybe none of these pickups are original though. Somebody would have had to drill holes in the surrounds to add the screw in the middle wouldn't they? Are replacement surrounds available? The 3 hole pickup surrounds are very hard to find. There is a rumor that there is a box of them at the Hoshino office in Pennsylvania. After I polished the frets it plays very nicely and I dig the sound of the super 70s. The neck pickup gives a great warm and fuzzy sound. I still need to work on cleaning up the bridge (or hopefully getting a new one eventually) and the jack needs rewiring. I'm also toying with the idea of making some new pickup surrounds out of wood since one of them is cracked but that's probably a ways off. For now I'm just looking forward to buying my next Ibanez
