I have an Ibanez LP custom. Problem is, I cannot find a serial number anywhere on it. It has the open book headstock with the split diamond and all the original hardware. I would like to be able to date it. It's in the "shop" getting a fret job at the moment or I would post a pic. Any info on how I can find out when it was made would be helpful...thanks |

Hi Jealpcustom, From you description, I'd say it must be a pre 1975 2350. (Detailed) pics might help you out a little more exactly. Paul |

Hi Paul, thanks for your thoughts. I will post some pics when I get it back. Is the serial number hidden somewhere or where there years that did not have numbers? Or perhaps it was just a sticker? Jim |

Jim, If there was a serialnumber you'd have found it. They are not hidden. If a number is present on a guitar, it is on the neckplate in case of a bolt on neck or inkstamped on the back of the headstock in case of a setneck version. Try a keyword search for 2350. There are loads of picks of those available up here. You should be able to find a pic of a guitar that is matching yours. Paul |

PS, Serialnumbers started somewhere mid 1975. Before that there were no numbers used at all. That is why you need detailed pics of the used hardware and control cavity layout, for instance, to date it more accurately. When provided with good pics we should be able to pin it down to one or two years exactly. Paul |

Paul, Again, thanks for the info...it's kinda sad that I have had this guitar for almost 30 years and know nothing about it.. I checked out some pics on this site, some look pretty similar. The only thing I notice is on most the CUSTOM on the headstock is in small letter...mine are larger letters. Not sure if that means anything either. Jim |

The large custom print on the truss rod cover was changed just before 1975 to the small print so this also points to a 73 or 74 model. Paul |
