Hi

Great site, but at the risk of going off-topic...rant ahoy!

The (other) guitar player in my band is a very fine player, if you want to be (another) SRV copyist. He has the guitar with all the right painty bits chipped off, the amp, the pedals, gets all the right sounds at the right time etc.

However, he has a very bad attitude towards any guitar that doesn't fit in with this world view. Very narrow, very smug. He sneers at my hand-made solid mahogany strat, dismisses my '94 Vester 335 custom, says my Takamine acoustic is "not a guitar".

Just today, and here's the point, he was telling me that 70's Ibanez guitars were cheap. I disagreed, saying cheapER than the originals they were based on, and I just paid $1000 for one, eg not cheap, and he said yes, but if I'd ever played an Ibanez Les Paul I'd understand. "I've got one," I said. (I've had it since he was aspiring to long pants.) So...I'd...know.

Tw*t.

This sort of thing bothers me in an entirely irrational way. I hope you don't mind me getting this off my chest here, but I am thoroughly sick of a bunch of ignorant Spandex Jimmys ignoring the evidence and spouting the recieved opinion that thankfully is totally absent on this site, i.e. that Jap is Crap. Maybe the news has yet to reach this town.

So it's either this or I plant him.

I thank you. You have done peace a great service.

You can rant as much as you like. Or as much as me if you like..

If I were you H, I'd kick Stevie Ray Clone in the bollocks and leave the band.

Right!
I too hate those "snobs" that refuse to judge a guitar by sound and playability, but just by the name that's on the headstock. And this guy in particular doesn't seem to have the guts to choose a "neutral" guitar but it had to be a SRV rip-off. In fact he's playing a copy, too! These kind of guys are no players, they're poseurs and show-offs and they absolutely have no idea about guitars!
Unfortunately I get them in my shop every week....(sigh..!!!!)

Cheap......... of course Ibanez are cheap. My first AR500 cost me $625 brand new, an LP standard at the time was around $1000 new and a strat $800.
But I can guarantee that I got the better guitar.

Personally, I've always thought Fender was a "cheap" brand.

I'm a big USA/Japan Fender guy...they are far from cheap. As with any brand of guitar, there will always be models that may or may not be up to some peoples standards. It's user preference and opinion. Some early Ibanez guitars were in fact "cheap"...however most were just the opposite.

I'm also a big Ibanez fan..I would and do take my Artist over a LP any day, but I still can appreciate a good LP.

A SRV fan will never bow away from a strat...I still don't hear much difference in any song he ever did..it all blends to me. But the sound is unmistakable.

It's all about the sound...ability to say in tune in sessions, how you can express yourself with it, and how it makes you feel..if a can and string make you feel good and sound good to you...then have at it and don't let anyone talk you out of it!

Thats just my humble opinion.

Hackney,
This is an argument that could go on forever, a bit like set necks Vs bolt ons, GM Vs Ford, not to mention politics.

Perhaps you need to find a Tele (Ibanez of course), just to change to argument topic.

You are all beautiful people.

I have an 70's Antoria Tele, funnily enough, Snowy. Needs a bit of attention, but I see your point...

I once saw a bumper/fender sticker on a Land Rover, read "I'd rather push my Land Rover than drive a Jeep."

You might have to invert the meaning, but the sentiment stands. Performance over badge.

But I still might deck the f%#@*r.

When I picked up my Artist in the early 80's I was under the impression that ALL jap guitars were in fact "cheap". To think of the guitars I passed up back then because of my ignorance is staggering.
