Hey guys, I have what I suspect is a 73 SG. Its creamy white colored w/ gold pickups. plate says made in japan but no serials. "ibanez" sript on the mustache top head stock. Also has a 5 pc inlay on head and block inlays on fretboard. I'm getting ready to sell on ebay and just wondering what its worth. Paid 100 bucks back in 88 or 89. head_stock body plate chipped_paint

I think it's worth about 450 to 525 bucks.

Wow!!!! I feel like I'm on that show "Antique Roadshow". Thats pretty good. Makes me wonder if I shouldn't hold on to it and see what its worth in another 10 years. Anyone else want to chime in?

Hi Johnweatherhead

Your cream SG is pretty rare. Mostly we see the "ordinary" walnut/cherry finishes.
Nevertheless I would not offer the price Scott is suggesting: I'd say the value of your SG is around 400 dollars (given it's condition as far as I can tell so from your pictures).

Kind greetz,
Harry

Does anyone know if it is a 1973 model? I looked through the catalog thats posted online and couldn't really find anything quite like it.

Is it worth it to try to have it restored? Or would that ruin the value?

Yes, maybe restoring it would possibly affect the value, but what is wrong with it?

Does anyome know exactly what this is? I can't figure it out, as it has a combination which I've never seen together on an Ibanez SG: batwing pickguard, split diamond inlay, rounded fretboard with block inlays all the way to the 21st fret, and finished in white. Looks like its closest relative would be the 2354S, but these didn't have the split diamond inlay and catalogues show them as only coming out in walnut finish. Anyone?

I would get the paint fixed and have the hardware re-plated if I thought it would increase its value. But if that would actually decrease its value, then I guess I wouldn't touch it. I only play it once or twice a year. I mainly play a classical acoustic so the sg's neck feels real cramped to me now. If I keep it, it would only be to hold it as an investment on a possible higher future value.

I've seen this kind of SG before and was able to find it in old Ibanez price lists. This is model number 2354 SW ("W" for "White") and I ran through my archives to find some better pictures:

There is also a white SG with the Bigsby-style tremolo, model number is 2354 W.
Both models had gold hardware and the split-diamond inlay in the headstock. As far as I know they have been in production from 1974 until 1976.

Here are some pics of the 2354 W. Unfortunately with exchanged pickups.

Jon: I wouldn't bother to paint it or replate the hardware. I don't think that's going to seriously affect your ability to get about $500 for it.

Heck, you can always sell it to me for $350.

Brent:

That yellowing is what we call a "vintage patina". :-)

Quite honestly, "fixing" the paintwork loses value. Authentic vintage is better anytime.
Same applies to plating - patina is the BEST!!

If it ainīt broke, DONīT fix it.

Stationc:

The fretboard stamps have shown up on quite a few guitars from the early to mid 70s. Most I've seen have been on the more expensive models. I have a Randy Scruggs with "Y4" stamped in the fretboard. I've seen them on an early Icemen, also. Their presence really doesn't seem to have a rhyme or reason.

Recently, we saw an early GB10 that had the original hang tag with a serial number on it that matched what was written on the inside label. Strangely, no SN was imprinted on the back of the headstock. However, the first few characters of the SN were stamped on the fretboard. First time I've seen that.

So, as yet, I consider them still a mystery.
