I have what I believe to be one of the early ones, no serial number, lovely ash wood, super 70's pickups and made in japan stickers on the neck, star tuners and all else original in pretty good condition (Just a few dings). Nothing molested or ever changed, and a case that could be original (black with blue lining shaped to fit but no brand name that i can see). I'm not spamming (hope this isn't considered as such). I had GAS for my mates Orville explorer, and I got this from another mate. To be honest, I don't play it but I've not really been able to guage a value from ebay on other sites. Just looking for ballpark figures, or links to ones for sale so i can compare. And opinion from others on these guitars. The multi peice construction and the thick finish (might be being harsh here) haven't bonded with me, but there seems to be a lot of fans. Ta guys. Are there different versions (construction/finish/hardware) to watch out for that affect value or was it all pretty much one model? And is no serial number a good thing? It seems to be made of so many pieces that I wonder if this is a cheaper model, or where they all built thay way? What exactly do you mean, because I can't see anything strange in the pictures. Can you figure out exactly of how many pieces of wood were used for the body. Normally with an Ibanez Explorer there should be 3 or 4. Or maybe you mean that the body of your Explorer has also 2 layers on top of each other? I know that way of construction from many other Ibanez solid bodies, but not from the Explorer. The fact that yours has no serial number means that you have one of the first made. As far as I know production started in 1976, so it is a new discovery for me that there are pre-serial Explorers. This means that yours must have been built before august 1975 (when ibanez guitars started to have serials). Or has somebody forgotten to stamp the serial in the back of the headstock? Could you show some pictures of the side of the body (if there is some kind of "pancake" construction)? It is how I would describe as pancake - my memory suggests there is a clear join down the middle of the sides of the body, and I think I counted 3 bits on top, 3 on body, and extra bit on the heel, and the headstock was two. This really put me off when I opened the case as it reminds me of the cheap epiphones. In answer to how it sounds.. well, acoustically it's loud and quite resonant, but quite a hollow sound to my ears (as in less mid range). Plugged in, I must say I like the pickups. They are low output, and have an almost single coil clarity without the harsh spike. I'm really a les paul man, so I do miss the boxy mid heavy squeak so I haven't really fallen in love with this one. How does it play? Not great, but I think the strings were 20 odd years old when I got it. The nut's possibly a bit too high so cowboys chords bend if you press too hard. I'm taking it in for a good set up soon so I'll have a better opinion when it comes back. I don't think it has been used much. Hardware is very shiny still. Only took me a few weeks to chip it tho. I'd love to know if this is a pre-serial number explorer. Is it a stamp or a sticker? If any ibanez experts live in london, I'd happily take this to you to have a look. I've certainly not tampered with it - would enyone do that for any reason? I got this through a mate in Switzerland who said he found it in Italy. I just wanted an explorer as it is the coolest guitar design ever but I couldn't afford a Hamer/Gibson Historic. Thanks for the nice comments - it is a looker even if it is made of 1000 matchsticks! I can count a 2 piece top, with only a tiny bit of the back horn the second bit. The bottom is 3 lumps, so that's 5 for the body alone. The two pics showing "top edge" prob show it off the best. I have to admit that these old Ibanez copies completely shattered my belief that guitars made from one or two pieces of wood sounded superior. These are very unique guitars tonally and are worth owning just for eye candy alone. Jim, the Destroyer you have in your hands is one of the most beautiful examples of this model that I have seen. Hammers and Gibson heritage models sound spongier and frankly un-dynamic compared to the Ibanez Destroyers. The fact that it is pre-serial # makes it all the more valuable. The only thing on your Destroyer that is not common to all Destroyers is the truss rod cover and the volume and tone knobs. The knobs mite not be original but you do see the "bell" truss rod cover on all Greco Destroyers and occasionally on Ibanez Destroyers. Absolutely gorgeous guitar you have there Jim, hang on to it tight!!! If you do sell it, I'll take it off your hands at the end of summer. I admit the eye candy factor scores with me - it's why I craved for an explorer. But as nice as it looks, it needs a set-up badly which it will shortly get and i should have done ages ago instead of leaving it in the case. I think I'll hold on to it now. If I change my mind, I'll post a classified or put up on ebay. For now, I'm gonna make sure I play it more.
