Can anyone tell me something about an ES 175
replica by Cimar. Saw one but cannot find any
info about it. It is supposed to be built by
Ibanez during the 70 s.

This is a recurring theme on this site and the answer is the same: Ibanez didn't have a factory. They had other companies manufacturing the guitars for them to their specs. There are many examples of ES175s or whatever that are remarkably similiar but they are not made by IBANEZ... If you like the features, the way it feels, plays and sounds then jump on it. Don't be too concerned with the name.

That's not strictly true about Cimar - as far as I can tell it was a brand owned by Hoshino/Elger - in fact later examples were often branded "Cimar By Ibanez".

I had an old Cimar Jazz bass which I'm pretty certain was a low-end Fuji Gen Gakki - it seemed identical to its Ibanez counterpart apart from having a plywood body.

Bassassin,

Your right, JohnS found these Cimar pictures in an Ibanez catalogue when we did some research on Henry Rayker's Blazer bass.

They had more of these sub brands, like the modern MAXXAS.

I saw a Cimar ES-175 copy in black sunburst back in 2001 I think it was, at Jazz in Lighttown (Eindhoven, Holland). The band played boogie-woogie and blues. Don't remember the name, but I remember dancing in the streets and talking to the frontman who owned it, because I couldn't read the name on the (lawsuit) headstock.
He had it quite cheap and was very happy with it.
