Wondering who might help me here. I have an Ibanez Les Paul copy, natural finish that I'm interested in hearing opinions about. It 's in kind of rough shape...some rusting hardware, a big of "growth" on the finish, and I'm trying to find out a couple of things: 1)What is the model name/number? 2)Its age... 3)Any suggestions about whether/how to get it back in working shape. I've owned it for about 25 years and am intersted in picking it back up to play a bit... Pictures are posted here... http://web.mac.com/chrisnatale/iWeb/Ibanez%20Guitar/Photos.html Any help is much appreciated. Thanks Chris |

Chris...Looks like a model #2420. Check the serial number for the date (On an Ibanez Serial # from this era, the Alpha corresponds to the month (ie A=January, B=February and so on), the nex 2 digits are the year..... This looks like a '76 or '77 to me, one of the later ones. I always liked this model 'cause a lot of the tops are very flamey and the tourtoise binding is real classy. The original would have had 2 Super 80's (with the Flying fingers logo) on them as well as tourtoise colored pickguard. This was one of the nicer clones and Ibanez used the same hardware on these as the Scruggs/Weir in the Top-of the line Professional Series -I have a '76 catalog that has hand written prices of $350 for this guitar, top of the line was $999 ..... This guitar looks like its in fair shape, probably just needs a cleanup/tuneup an she will be good to go. May I suggest.. 1)general cleanup with soft cloth/water 2) Clean fretboard w/naptha (lighter fluid) 3)Wire brush the rustty parts 4)Contact cleaner into the pot ports will eliminate "scratchy" pots 5)Fret polish (I use #1000 steel wool) 6)Treat Board with lemon oil 7)Tighten machine heads 8)New strings |
