In a recent pawn shopping spree, I ran across a lawsuit-headstock Deluxe 59'er LP copy. It was kind of trashed, but interesting to look at. I almost never see any "vintage" (pre 80's) Ibanez guitars in my area, so this one caught my eye. The most striking thing about it was how cheesy it was. Am I right in assuming this to be a really low-end model?

The top and back were made out of what looked like pine, with no stain. The top was arched, and was hollow underneath. You could rap on the top and feel there was a gap between the top and the body underneath. The sides were painted black. The pickups and hardware looked like they were probably original.

So what's the story on these guitars? How do these compare to the other Ibanez Les Paul copies? Does this one seem original the way I've described it? If I could get it for a give-away price, would it make a decent player?

Just wondering.

Hi Mark,

I have a Deluxe 59'er. It is pretty low end on the Ibanez Food Chain. It listed for 299.00 new in '77. Mine is a '74, and has no serial no.'s. I believe that it does have a gap between the body and the arched top. It is fairly light, and has exposed humbuckers. But it PLAYS GREAT!!! I also have a Ibanez LP Recording, and prefer the 59'er's sound and feel. The Recording was fairly Upscale, and listed for 425.00 in '77. I got mine for 150.00, and it's been worth every penny, IMHO.

Thanks for the info, Tony. Is yours like I described, with natural top and back and black painted sides? I just wonder if the one I was looking at had been stripped or something. I hate to confess my ignorance, but this is the only one I've seen. If I could verify that it was the original finish, I'd probably buy it. The one I was looking at was a true lawsuit guitar because it had the Gibson open-book headstock. I think it needs a good home.

The finish on mine is Black Spray Paint. I found it was last painted a blue and orange sparkle. Before I bought it, the previous owner painted it black, which was it's original color. It looks like #&!!, but plays very nice. If you can get this thing <$150.00, I'd jump on it!

Hey Gang,
I purchased a Ibenez Deluxe 59er about 25 yrs ago. I had bought it off a friend for $100, sold it back to him for $120 and bought it back form him for $90..lol...go figure. It's sunburst with "tiger" strips. I've tried to get it set up better but the tech told me, it needed a new bridge. That is my question...can I get a new bridge and stop tailpiece for it??...anyone??
Though it's always been a "secondary" guitar for me, I've had it longer than all other guitars I've owned and sold. Thx...

Hi Stranger!

Sure you can. Depends if you want it to be an original Ibanez replacement, than things could get difficult. But your local or near-by guitar shop can tell you all about it. Should not be difficult: several brands of replacement parts can offer you various bridges and tailpieces that will suite your likes.
Greetings,
Harry

Thx Harry,
Tho the problem I've run into before, that the ibenez parts are different from "gibson" parts. I will be checking again, to see if I can get parts that match the measurements on the Ibenez.

Thx again..

Can anyone out there tell me the number of Deluxe 59'ers (2342's) that were made in the ivory finish with maple fingerboard (referred to in the 1977 Catalogue as the "Sunlight Special"), as opposed to the black/rosewood ones? Also do we know how many, if any, of the ivory/maple version were supplied to Ibanez dealers in the UK or Europe?

My thanks to any of you Ibanez scholars who can answer this.

Moonlighter, in regard to this era, sadly the manufacturing numbers are not available for this model, but I would imagine with confidence, there was 350 to 500 units made.

Thanks Capn'!

I first became aware of the ivory/maple 2342 when I saw Paul Gilbert's uncle Jimi Kidd with one on the cover of their joint album Raw Blues Power. Then I spotted another one on an old Jim Reeves LP cover. I've seen a couple of black ones over here and in fact currently own one of them, but I've never come across the ivory/maple version in the flesh. Hence my question re. how many, if any, were sent to the UK. That particular finish with the light neck looks rather swish in my opinion, so if you hear of anyone anywhere near my part of the world with one for sale please let me know.

All the best,

Moonlighter

I just bought a 1976 Deluxe 59'er with case exactly like the one I sold many years ago. Always regretted selling it.

Paid $375 and felt I got a good deal. It's a translucent blonde/cream version that I have only seen a very few on the market the last 4 years I have been looking.

John I was going through an old photo album and came across a pic of me playing one of these back in 1976. I'll try to get a scan of it but its funny because in the pic I am wearing white jeans a white shirt and holding the 2342 so you can barely make out the guitar. That was actually one of my first experiences with an Ibanez. Only thing is I think it was a set neck and it was HEAVY!

So that guitar looks just like mine. Now I know it is Ivory and the model number. Thanks a bunch. I can't believe this was considered low on the Ibanez food chain. Like I said, I paid $375 used for mine in 8/10 condition a few months ago and I feel like it was worth every penny.

I recently bought whatI was told is a Deluxe 59'er. Only the ones I've seen do not look like mine.
Mine has no serial number,a Gibson headstock with the logo in script. It has a creme colored binding on a Cherry stained mahogany pancake body.Gold Hardware that is turning silver/chrome.Covered p'ups. USA Grovers were added.

Do I have the Recording LP or the 59'er?
Help/Specs please

Duane, The Deluxe 59'er should say "Deluxe 59'er" right on the headstock.....

Eatapeach:

As Dave says, a true Deluxe 59er will say so on the headstock. The Recording LP replica would have lots of extra electronics and switches.

Sounds like you have one of the many variant LP models made before mid-75. The only way to tell for sure is match your guitar to old catalog shots. Here's two good sites to start looking:

LP-I wish I could.But I dont have a digital camera,yet...

Upon looking at the sites provided..I have found that it does have the Gibson open book headstock. There is no name on it anywhere.I found a model in the catalogs on one of the sites that looked very much like the one I have. The model number escapes me at the moment, but I will go back and find out..

After some more checking..I have not been able to find a match for mine. The design on the headdstock is like one I saw on an SG. The logo is script, and the design is a pair of 'triangles top and bottom, seperated by a horizontal'slash'.

Paul-Thanks for the links.
I didnt see any that looked exactly like mine, but there was some nice ones.

Mine is cherry red on top, with some grain showing. The sides and back are a brown-red transparent stain that clearly shows beautiful mahogany grain. The once gold hardware now is showing silver.I believe from what I've seen it's a 2350

Wow - great site. I was recently lucky enough to replace my first "real" guitar, a 77 Ibanez Deluxe 59'er exactly like the one in the post of JohnS on April 1, 2005. I purchased the same guitar in 1977, it was stolen in 1984. I searched on and off over the past 22yrs to find that guitar or one exactly like it and was fortunate to aquire on this past January.

Its really great reading all the posts here on the 59'er. For something that was suppose to be a "low-end" guitar, I met my expectations.

Bill
